The pastry program at this Crown Heights neighborhood favorite is led by Tiff Bryant, who turns out sweet-savory bites to eat in or take to Prospect Park. Come by in the morning for a kolache, a Czech treat popular in Texas (where owner Claire Sprouse grew up). Here they're filled with soft scrambled eggs, curried caramelized onions, and cheddar; persimmon and blood orange; and pecan or sour apple. Black pepper and sage shortbreads are on offer all day. Look out for desserts like grapefruit and coriander cupcakes, the proceeds from which Hunky Dory donated to Breaking Bread, a volunteer-run initiative to bring meal kits to food-insecure families across New York.

Like its much-loved loaves, Tartine Bakery’s spinoff turns rusticity into an art form. Sharing a massive industrial space with the Heath Ceramics factory, it boasts large windows, floods of natural light, and a crowd of millennial worker bees seeking morning ham-and-cheese danishes and sinfully good pain au chocolate with Valrhona chocolate. Also on the menu: beer, wine, soft-serve ice cream and perfectly tangy house-made shrub sodas.

This indie hot spot with a retro-chic décor and cool staff has many things going for it. First, there’s the team, who’ve already struck gold on the city’s dining scene. Then there’s the location, inside the former Heller’s Bakery, which was an age-old local institution. And finally, there’s the food, featuring tempting baked goods in the morning, quiches and sandwiches at lunch and a full dinner carte at night. From the bakery come irresistible baguettes and sourdough, guava turnovers, and blueberry ginger scones among other tantalizing hand-carbs.

The architecturally intriguing Hayden Tract district is the perfect backdrop for this adventurous little beau, brought to you by Jordan Kahn (of Vespertine). Those unfamiliar with the aesthetic might find this highly functional space too minimal, but every detail returns your attention to the food. Get some vitamin D as you sit outside munching a (gluten-free) chocolate almond rocher cookie, a mini bananas foster bundt cake, or a jam bar (house-made jam between almond shortbread cookies, like a grown-up Nutri-Grain Bar) or order for pick-up and eat it at home—if you can wait that long.
