My St. Pete-Clearwater with Chef Nathan Howey of Fortu

The chef's favorite picks around town.

Chef Nathan Howey now spends most of his time behind the stove at St. Petersburg's Fortu but the talented chef has spent time in kitchens across the U.S. He began his career in small-town northern Ohio at family-owned restaurants before setting off for New York, where he mastered butchery. He headed south to Orlando to open and operate a number of restaurants in hotels and resorts before relocating to the Tampa Bay area to develop Fortu and fast-casual concepts like Top Slice Pizza and Black Cattle Burgers. He's finally found his home here in St. Pete-Clearwater. "This great community is the best place I could find myself," he says. And, while he has several new concepts in the works, he still finds plenty of time to enjoy the area's many restaurants.

We asked Chef Howey for his favorite spots around town, from easy nights out to special occasion spots and everything in between. Find his favorites below.

Where are some of your favorite restaurants in St. Pete/Clearwater?

When I get an evening away from the kitchen, I prefer to spend it on a date night with my wife. We really enjoy the vibrance and simplicity of Olivia. A staple of South Tampa and having recently relocated to St. Pete, it has really been a great addition to the Downtown dining options. Their simple, quality cocktails and consistent, classic Italian offerings make for a great meal.

Where would you suggest a first-timer go?

For a first-timer, Il Ritorno is the first place that comes to mind. They have awesome pastas and an always changing tasting menu.

Where would you recommend for a big celebration?

Using big in terms of a great dining experience with a large guest count, Bascom’s Chop House comes to mind. It's an unpretentious old school steakhouse located between St. Pete and Clearwater, is always packed and has room to serve huge parties. I’d never turn down a good steak.

Where would you suggest for dining alone?

Sitting back and relaxing with a burger and a beer at Engine No. 9. In a world filled with smash patties, they do a great job with a traditional larger format, and an aggressive number of topping options to choose from.

How about for a meal with your family?

My family loves breakfast! Pancakes, waffles, French toast, bennys and bacon! Social Roost has it and my kids love it!

Where do you go for simple comfort food?

Mazzaro’s Italian Market is the best sandwich shop in town. Get there early for lunch, as the line gets long!

Any hidden gems?

In Between Days can be a cool spot to enjoy records and sip on a good sake collection.

Do you have a favorite hotel?

The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club is a great option when staying in St. Pete. It has all of the amenities to look for in a modern resort, but when paired with the aesthetics of the historic building and grounds, it's a great way to relax for a weekend. (Editor's Note: They are celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2026).

Where would we find you on a day off?

When I’m able to get a moment away from the restaurant, I take the opportunity to spend it with the family. Madeira Beach is a favorite of ours, more of a laid-back beach area with a lot of snacks an ice cream shops for the kids.

What is one place a visitor can't miss?

As a big sports fan, Tropicana Field is a great place to see a game, especially when my childhood favorite Cleveland Guardians are in town. I’d also have to say the beautiful artwork at The Dalí Museum is a must see.
