New Bib Gourmands Announced: The MICHELIN Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2022

16 New ‘Bibs’ in the Great Britain & Ireland Guide

We are delighted to announce that there are 16 new Bib Gourmand restaurants in the 2022 Great Britain and Ireland selection, of which 13 are new additions to the Guide. Named after Bibendum – the MICHELIN Man – our Bib Gourmand distinction highlights restaurants offering good food at competitive prices – and our readers love them.

In total, 122 restaurants have been awarded a Bib Gourmand in our 2022 selection. Below are details about all the new awards, followed by a complete list of all the Bib Gourmand awards in the MICHELIN Great Britain & Ireland Guide 2022.

Brutto, Clerkenwell
Talented restaurateur Russell Norman’s wonderfully relaxed trattoria, a stone’s throw from Smithfield Market, brings a taste of the Tuscan sun to the cold British capital – and it’s impossible not to love it. Staff are friendly, the atmosphere’s buzzing, and the great value menu of authentic Tuscan favourites offers everything from moreish deep-fried dough ball ‘cuddles’ or penne with tomato and vodka, to a rich beef shin and peppercorn stew or some seriously-sized steaks. Add in a signature negroni and you’ve got all the hallmarks of a great night out.

Pahli Hill, Regent’s Park and Marylebone
A couple of minutes’ walk from Oxford Circus tube is this bright restaurant with an open kitchen and a fresh, fun vibe. The cooking has a lighter style than at most Indian restaurants: choose from dishes such as Mangalore bun with crab sukkha, fennel seeds, crushed chilli & ginger or sea bass stewed in banana leaf, accompanied by some delicious Tandoori sourdough roti with house ghee. Sharing is encouraged, staff are friendly and professional – and there’s an intimate bar in the basement.

After pop-ups in Mayfair and Soho, manteca has found a permanent home – and such a likeable restaurant is a hard-to-find thing: the staff are lovely, the Italian menu offers something for everyone and the cooking is bold and satisfying – it’s no wonder they are so busy! Sharing is encouraged but not compulsory – and let’s face it, who wants to let someone else eat some of their lamb sausage with lentils and salsa verde or tonnarelli with brown crab cacio e pepe?

Humble Chicken, Soho
Having worked at some of the world’s top restaurants – including Trinity and Restaurant Story – talented young Japanese chef Angelo Sato set up this fun, modern spot which serves every part of the slow-reared, free-range chicken he sources from Sutton Hoo Chicken, including the offal and the bones. Sit at the counter and order yakitori skewers cooked over the charcoal grill, which include such delights as ‘soft knee and cartilage’ and a delicious ‘Tsukune meatball’ of all the trimmings.

Imad’s Syrian Kitchen, Soho
The former site of Darjeeling Express is now home to this contagiously fun and instantly likeable restaurant offering authentic Middle Eastern flavours. The life and times of Imad, the eponymous owner, would make a great film and his eagerness to please underpins the whole restaurant. The generous pricing also allows for unabashed over-ordering of the sharing plates and, whether it’s kabab Hindi minced lamb with chopped tomatoes, mixed spices & pine nuts, or Jaj Barghol grilled chicken thigh with bulgur wheat, they never fail to hit the spot.

England

Andria, Dartmouth – Devon
The queue outside speaks volumes about this rustic, on-trend bistro: the staff are driven and enormously hard-working and local ingredients shine in the original, flavour-packed modern European dishes like Brixham crab with apple, ginger & lemon sorrel, or stir-fried sprouts with miso caramel, chilli, garlic & ginger. Small plates are listed alongside snacks, sides and puds; they recommend choosing three each to share and they come as and when they are ready.

Burnt Orange, Brighton – East Sussex
The former Old Coach House pub has been given a super-stylish makeover and is now serving vibrant Middle Eastern inspired sharing dishes which are full of colour and flavour. Start with a cocktail; choose the set menu, 'Orange Experience', for dishes like crispy smoked lamb shoulder cigars & Padron yoghurt or Galician octopus with harissa truffle butter & potatoes – and stay till late at the bar. Service is friendly and well-organised and there’s a banging soundtrack too.

Kintsu, Colchester – Essex
What used to be Grain restaurant has been reborn as Kintsu, serving small tasting plates and snacks. Original dishes could include lentil and chestnut mushroom slider with brioche and miso, or roasted monkfish with butternut squash, almond and caper butter. They recommend 3 or 4 per person and, while some have subtle Japanese influences, there’s also an interesting selection of plant-based dishes. Service is friendly and informed – and there’s a two-seater chef’s table if you’d like to see the kitchen action close up.

Sargasso, Margate – Kent
From the team behind neighbourhood favourite Brawn comes this lively, simply decorated seaside spot right on the harbour and close to the Turner Contemporary art gallery. Cooking is straightforward, with pleasing textures and distinct flavours: the great choice of seasonal dishes might include parmesan fritters, sea bass with coco beans, violet artichoke & spinach, or sponge pudding with custard & poached pear. The terrace has great views and the DJ deck gets a lot of use.

Sculthorpe Mill, Sculthorpe – Norfolk
Sisters Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton have taken over this striking former mill, set beside the River Wensum, and have brought it bang up-to-date, with a chic, contemporary interior, a modish bar, bright, beamed rooms and roaring fires. Choose from the bar menu or the ingredient-led à la carte; dishes are well-judged and flavoursome, and include plenty of options for vegetarians. The waterside terrace with its outside kitchen is the perfect spot come summer – and you can sleep it all off in one of six contemporary bedrooms.

The Hollist Arms, Lodsworth – West Sussex
This pretty stone pub sits in an equally picturesque village and its simple, pared-down interior has a vintage, shabby-chic vibe; if it’s sunny, head for the terrace. Cooking has a straightforward, unfussy style and is rooted in the classics, with Mediterranean overtones. Appealing, well-executed dishes like braised pig's cheeks, polenta, chorizo & gremolata or Cornish plaice with tomato salad & aioli burst with flavour and, while the daily menu is concise, it covers a good range of dishes and offers great value.

Republic of Ireland

Cush, Ballycotton
Cush is family owned and run, and guests are well looked after by the friendly, welcoming team. The smart, modern restaurant sits in a pretty coastal town; there's also a traditional pub and stylish, comfy bedrooms, with views out over the rooftops to the fishing boats in the harbour. Regional produce features in hearty, seasonal, modern dishes, with locally caught seafood naturally to the fore: choices might include grilled fillet of haddock with leeks, haddock fishcake & Ballycotton Queens in seaweed butter.

Éan, Galway
Éan is owned by Enda McEvoy of One MICHELIN Starred Loam – which also earned itself a MICHELIN Green Star in 2021 – so it’s no surprise to see a similar approach to seasonality, sourcing and sustainability at this artisan bakery-cum-café, which morphs into a wine bar in the evenings. Pastries, sandwiches, salads and soups are on the menu at lunch, while dinner sees creative, confidently executed dishes like squid toast with white miso & bonito, or lamb shoulder with cider carrots, designed for sharing. A natural, biodynamic and organic wine list completes the picture.

This unpretentious, welcoming bistro in the heart of the city is run with great pride – and so it should be, given the care that they take with the cooking and the generosity with which it is served. Sit in the characterful downstairs room under a vaulted brick ceiling to enjoy confidently crafted, flavoursome dishes like Castletownbere crab & gazpacho or braised shoulder of Comeragh mountain lamb with coco beans, carrot & smoked almond, which showcase the best of the Irish larder.

Scotland

Ka Pao, Glasgow
A fun and affordable spot serving tasty, Asian-inspired cooking, Ka Pao is housed in the spacious, industrial-style basement of a former garage, a few streets away from Glasgow’s Botanical Gardens. Dishes like crispy duck leg with green papaya & jaew, or roast pork belly with burnt tomato sambal, choy sum & jasmine rice have immense flavour and depth. Friendly staff are well-versed in speedy, effective service and the buzz of happy diners is all around.

Celentano's, Glasgow
New to the Glasgow dining scene, this simply decorated, homely-style bistro is situated on the ground floor of a boutique hotel close to the Necropolis. There’s an experienced chef at the helm and the modern, Italian-influenced cooking uses the finest Scottish ingredients and comes with plenty of flavour. Staff are keen to recommend dishes: choose from such delights as lasagne fritti with porcini and Cora Linn, or beef ragu pappardelle, with Lanark White.
