New Awards for 2021

Green Star
This year’s Michelin Guide saw the introduction of the new Michelin ‘Green Star’ distinction which highlights restaurants that are at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices. Over the whole of the UK and Ireland, 23 restaurants won this new award – and one of these is in Wales.

Henry Robertson – Palé Hall, Llandderfel
This elegant restaurant is situated in Palé Hall Hotel, with a lovely view of its garden. Menus reflect the seasons, and the local larder is very much to the fore in the tasty dishes – including organic herbs, fruits and vegetables grown in their own walled garden. They have an on-site hydro-electric plant, which provides carbon-neutral energy to power the entire hotel and also run an incentive scheme for innovative contributions to reduce their carbon footprint.

Michelin Plate

The Gaff, Abergavenny
This bright, fun restaurant is set in three converted sheds hidden away in the centre of town. Daily changing menus list an appealing selection of well-priced small plates, which range from a scotch egg or duck burger to pork schnitzel or some local game.

Black Bear Inn, Bettws Newydd
This charming inn sits in a rural spot, close to the Victorian market town of Usk and is personally run by a husband and wife team. The constantly evolving menu is formed around top quality local produce, and dishes like gurnard with lentils and kale or duck breast, onion marmalade and carrots are full of flavour.

Nook, Cardiff
This homely, simply styled neighbourhood bistro is located opposite the famous Victoria Park, and bottles of natural and low-intervention wines line its walls. The frequently changing menu lists 10 or so very tasty small plates; perhaps creamed cod pie with dill or chocolate mousse with honeycomb.

Thomas, Cardiff
Having spent time in London, the eponymous Thomas Simmons is back in his homeland, at this elegant bar and restaurant. Prime local ingredients are delivered with restraint in dishes like BBQ hispi cabbage or fillet of Welsh beef with celeriac, black garlic and bone marrow; the Muscovado tart is a must.
