For more than two decades, Baan Khanitha has been showcasing some of the best authentic Thai food to be found in central Bangkok. In a setting that is elegant, yet at the same time casual, the restaurant is not called ‘Baan’ (house or home in Thai) for nothing, as its family-style, home-cooked dishes are made with ingredients from its own organic farm, Baan Panalai. Wouldn’t it be great if you could take your mom to the kind of place that she used to take you to? Well, you’re in luck, because Je Ngor is that kind of place. Even if you haven’t yet dined in any of their branches, there are plenty reasons why you should do so, and take your mom along too. The eponymous owner Na-Chanok “Je Ngor” Sae-Ung is a food enthusiast and a self-trained chef who pays great attention to detail. She has made her name for some wonderful seafood dishes, as well as the must-try ‘pad pak bung foy’, stir-fried threads of morning glory with garlic and chili. Don’t miss the black pepper crab, which is made with extra-large mud crab stir-fried with black pepper sauce. Even today, at the age of 80, Je Ngor still supervises and helps with the training and teaching in the restaurant’s cooking school.

Treat your mom to a home-cooked meal from the East of Thailand at this spacious place. Step inside and you’ll see how the homely interior gives you an idea of what it’s like in the countryside. The recipes are from the owner’s ex-beauty queen mother, who is the executive chef at the restaurant. Trat is a province in the coastal region of Eastern Thailand from where both the family and the cuisine originate. Regional dishes feature ingredients such as fish sauce, salted fish and chamuang leaves, which are used to enhance the flavors of fresh fish and other ingredients. Don’t miss the ‘Miang pla tub tim’, a crispy fish in tamarind sauce and Thai herbal condiments that gives you the chance to make your own betel leaf wrap, and the pan-fried minced pork and salted fish patty, which is a good example of what mothers all over the province make at home.

The mission of this Thai restaurant is stated in the name: to preserve local food. That’s why from the moment you step inside you’ll feel that they are keeping the ancient heritage alive, through antiques, traditional style and century-old recipe books. Only the finest local ingredients are used to prepare dishes from old, almost forgotten recipes, as well as the owner’s family recipes. As you might expect, they make all their curry pastes from scratch, using a mortar and pestle to produce the best, most aromatic result possible. There is a strong southern influence among many dishes on the menu, such as ‘Gaeng Kua Nuea Pu Bai Som Pan Ki Ma’, a yellow curry with crab meat and the rare leaves of som pan ki ma citrus. Another fiery dish is their mom’s spicy stir-fried southern curry with crispy-fried fish and Thai herbs, made extra dry in a unique way known as ‘kua kling’.
