Hometown Barbecue New York (New York)
Tucked inside a converted warehouse in Red Hook, Hometown Barbecue is home to some of the most finger licking and comforting pit-smoked meats in New York. Save yourself the hassle of standing in line and instead order directly from Caviar, just be careful though, the flavors of the brisket, pulled pork, and beef ribs can be so intense you'll find yourself wondering if you’ll eat kale or muesli ever again. You've been warned.
Inspector notes: "A side of collard greens simply enhances the feast. Fat, considered by some a bad word, is what gives the meat its succulence and soft texture, as does the crust of salt, pepper, and turbinado sugar."
Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too (New York)
Tasty Southern classics meet New York chic at Miss Mamie's. Located off Central Park West, this homey soul food spot produces hit after hit like baked turkey wings, homemade meatloaf, Louisiana catfish, Southern-fried chicken sided by candied yams and collard greens, and a creamy red velvet cake for dessert. Need more proof of how tasty the food is? Miss Mamie's was frequently visited by former President Bill Clinton when he setup his Harlem office along with countless other local VIPs.
Inspector notes: "Grab a fresh-squeezed lemonade and dive into the sampler, stocked with deep-fried shrimp, fall-off-the-bone beef short ribs, fried chicken, and sides of cornbread stuffing and hoppin' John. Desserts are made in house, so a slice of peach cobbler or wedge of sweet potato pie are mandatory."
Smoque BBQ (Chicago)
Once the doors open at 11:00 A.M., a crowd swarms this Chicago favorite all clamoring for mouthwatering brisket and smokey baby back ribs. Good thing you can avoid that by ordering in. But with so many delicious choices, the hard part is choosing what not to order.
Inspector notes: "The half-and-half sandwich, piled with pulled pork and brisket, is the best of both worlds, with chunky shreds of tender pork and spice-rubbed slices of pink-rimmed beef spooned with vinegary barbecue sauce. The usual side dish suspects like zingy, crisp coleslaw and deeply smoky baked beans are anything but standard here, complementing main dishes as they should. For a sweet finish, look no further than pecan bread pudding drizzled with salted caramel-Bourbon sauce."
Federalist Pig (Washington D.C.)
The nation's capital unites over their love of owner Steve Salis's barbecue at the Federalist Pig. The pitmaster's wood-smoked pork, brisket, and turkey might be some of the best ‘cue you’ll find in town.
Inspector notes: "Do yourself a favor and order the “works” to try a bit of everything only to find that almost nothing disappoints. Equally craveable are their inventive and filling sandwiches, with clever names like The Faux Q or The Big Bad Wolf."
All Day Baby (Los Angeles)
We've had breakfast sandwiches before, but how many can say they've had one that's made from a tower of softly scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and American cheese laying beneath a cloak of strawberry jam and stacked between a fluffy, cathead biscuit. Is your mouth watering yet? Then go ahead and place an order from this feel-good spot that eschews the typical Silver Lake fare.
Inspector notes: "Not everything is sweet at this charming café. In fact, some things are fried, like the hot fish sandwich inspired by Nashville’s hot chicken. Neat rows of cookies, pies and breads in the pastry case are yet another temptation from a restaurant that all but induces a nap."
