Chef Napol ‘Joe’ Jantraket is one of Thailand’s rising young chefs. After spending more than 10 years in Canada, he and his partner Saki Hoshino decided to settle back in his homeland. He quickly earned one MICHELIN Star for 80/20 during its early years before opening his own restaurant, Samlor, which is recognised with a Bib Gourmand recognition in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2024. His latest accomplishment is earning NAWA its first MICHELIN Star and the MICHELIN Opening of the Year award not long after it opened to the public.
In his younger years, Jantraket roamed Bangkok with a thirst for experience as a 'wild child,' in his own words, becoming well-connected and a master at holding court with a drink at social events. Now, as a devoted father and husband, his life has shifted slightly. He still seeks joy in life—now as a family man and, of course, as an avid experience seeker and food lover. Here are his top recommendations for where to eat, play, and unwind in his beloved Bangkok.
For a hot bowl of noodles: Rung Rueang Pork Noodle
“I live in Sukhumvit area. The street food place I frequent the most is Rung Rueang Pork Noodle in Sukhumvit 26. My wife, Saki, loves beef noodles. This place is also on the way to work. We’ve been eating here long before it was recognised with MICHELIN Bib Gourmand. The noodles are perfectly soft and sticky. The soup is well-balanced with a touch of sweetness from the bone broth. The right balance of lean meat and fat gives Rung Rueang’s minced pork a great texture. These are the reasons Rung Rueang has been Saki’s and my favourite noodle.”The fragrant noodle is topped with homemade fish balls and pork balls with bouncy textures. Choose from clear or Tom Yam broth. Don’t forget to add crispy fish skin for complete perfection.
10/3 Soi Sukhumvit 26, Sukhumvit Road, Khlong Tan Sub-District, Khlong Toei District, Bangkok.
For some family time: Benchasiri Park
“Benchasiri Park is a place where our family go for a walk. This park in the Phrom Phong area has a playground for Mia, my daughter. There’s also a basketball court for me. The best time for me is 9-10 am when the sun isn’t too strong. Sometimes we would go after 3 pm when more people come to jog, play sports, exercise, or simply relax. Watching people enjoying activities amid the luscious surroundings can be soothing.”Benjasiri Park is a modest green space nestled in the heart of the Em District, standing amidst trendy malls and hangout spots. For a larger urban park, head over to Benchakitti Park which offers more room for health-conscious activities and family outings. It features paths for running and cycling, as well as a forest area. Benchakitti Park is conveniently located near the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC).

For a sip or more: Mahaniyom Cocktail Bar
“Everyone with a 3-year-old knows how difficult it can be if you want to go for a drink. I like Mahaniyom Cocktail Bar because its drinks are creative and Thai-inspired. If you want to experience unique drinks infused with a Thai touch, Mahaniyom is the place.”Tucked away on Maha Set Road, Mahaniyom Cocktail Bar sits on the second floor of 100 Mahaseth (Bib Gourmand, MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2024). Co-run by Thailand's top bartender Ronnaporn ‘Neung’ Kanivichaporn, this spot mixes Thai identity into every cocktail and decor detail. From triangle pillows to wrought iron patterns and vibrant fluorescent pieces, the space oozes cultural charm with a chic, playful twist. It’s the perfect place to sip on unique drinks and soak up Bangkok’s vibrant atmosphere.

For a truly Bangkok experience: Charoen Krung Road
“Charoen Krung is where my restaurant Samlor is. The neighbourhood’s charm comes from the balanced mix between the old and the new. Talat Noi is an old market with traditional shops and businesses. There are also modern ventures that co-exist without jarring contrast. I think it’s one of the loveliest neighbourhoods in Bangkok. It’s also close to other modernised areas like Silom.”Charoen Krung is Thailand’s first road and remains one of Bangkok’s major thoroughfares. The road and neighbourhood are well-maintained, with developments made carefully to preserve their legacy. As a result, Charoen Krung is brimming with vibrancy and history. Established shops and restaurants, run by later generations, contribute to its charm. Many old and new spots are recognised by the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2024, including Sanyod (Sathon-Bang Rak) (Bib Gourmand), Sawang Noodles (Si Phraya) (Bib Gourmand), and Chef Jantraket’s Samlor (Bib Gourmand). For a chic café experience, Mother Roaster is the chef’s recommendation. Renovated from an old building, this coffee shop serves excellent coffee in an inviting atmosphere.

For a place to stay: Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River and Capella Bangkok
“I love the luxury on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River and Capella Bangkok are close to Charoen Krung and on the riverside. As soon as you step into the hotel, you can immediately experience the great vibe and service. Everyone, from receptionists to waitpersons is highly professional as expected. Their offerings and warm hospitality always make me feel great.”Capella Bangkok is considered one of the top urban resorts in the city. It features expansive gardens, elegant swimming pools, ample dining options, and a luxurious spa. Located just 10 minutes from Bangkok’s Old Town, the hotel offers rooms and suites with panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River. Next door, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, designed by the renowned Jean-Michel Gathy, provides a natural charm with contemporary art by local artists in public spaces. Each room offers high-end amenities typical of the Four Seasons brand.

For people watching: The EmQuartier
“The EmQuartier is close to where I live. There is everything for everyone. The location gives you insight into urbanised Bangkok. Its 5th floor houses Sky Garden with a nice atmosphere. Whenever I go to The EmQuartier, I’d take our daughter there to chill and observe people.”The EmQuartier is the second mall in the mega EM District project, which also includes The Emporium and the newly opened The Emsphere. The project transformed the Phrom Phong area into a comprehensive shopping and entertainment hub in the heart of Bangkok, drawing shoppers and experience seekers from all over the region.

For an unforgettable meal: Baan Tepa
“I’ve personally known Chef Tam for years. I admire what she believes in and tries to achieve. I can feel from her work at Baan Tepa that we share the same values – be it in Thai ingredients or farmers to drive impact on sustainability practices. I also see through her culinary creations that she has done a lot of research. Countless intricate details go into each dish before it is served to customers, which makes Baan Tepa a strong two MICHELIN Star establishment.”Baan Tepa is set in an elegant villa and was established through the determination of talented Chef Chudaree 'Tam' Debhakam, the first Thai female to earn two MICHELIN Stars as well as the winner of the 2024 MICHELIN Guide Young Chef Award. Chef Debhakam is committed to the farm-to-table concept, and her contemporary Thai menus are refined, and created from seasonal Thai ingredients sourced from sustainable suppliers or even her backyard. Each culinary creation at Baan Tepa is a journey through the regions of Thailand.

For the best rooftop bar: Ojo Bangkok
“I can feel the determination and commitment at Ojo. Its head chef, Francisco Paco Ruano, thoroughly understands the flavours Thai people love. The view from above is also breathtaking.”Enjoy Bangkok’s spectacular view from Thailand’s highest restaurant at The Standard Bangkok. Ojo’s elegant pink and gold décor bolsters how exceptional this dining spot is. Its authentic Mexican cooking proves this restaurant is far more than just its setting. Dishes are enticing. Try tender cochinillo and a selection of raw seafood. Request a window table or on the terrace where you can enjoy Bangkok’s most iconic view.

For a leisurely market stroll: Or Tor Kor Market
“I love Or Tor Kor Market because it has great standards, cleanliness, and management. You can learn about rotating seasonal produce at Or Tor Kor. The market has it all – fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, and other fresh ingredients. There are zones you can explore, including organic products or community products sold directly by local producers themselves.”Or Tor Kor Market, the Thai acronym for Marketing Organisation for Farmers, was established in 1977 on a 40-rai (64,000 sq. m.) site. It’s known as a place to taste and shop for premium food and agricultural products. The market has become a popular destination for foodies visiting Bangkok, as well as a playground for chefs in search of new inspiration.

For a fun soirée: Bang Rak District
“Bang Rak is up and coming. Great restaurants and bars have been popping up there. So, it’s the area you should check out. Start at Aunglo by Yangrak (Bib Gourmand, MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2024) which combines an izakaya vibe with the flavours of Thai street food. Fill your stomach there and visit Tropic City, if you want cocktails made from tropical ingredients. Go to Mod Kaew Wine Bar if you’d prefer natural wine. Late-night snacks there are also nice.”Bang Rak District is both a business and entertainment hub. It encompasses Charoen Krung, Bangkok’s prominent Old Town and Creative District. Si Lom is another key business area known for its vibrant lifestyle, with popular restaurants, bars, and hotels gaining increasing acclaim.

For some lush green time: Thung Thamna
“Although Thung Thamna isn’t exactly in Bangkok, it’s near enough for a day trip. It’s an organic agricultural learning centre and community farm. I took Mia there to have fun with growing rice, playing mud slider, feeding animals, and other activities. Children have an opportunity to be with nature and understand why sustainability is important.”Thung Thamna is an organic agricultural learning centre and community farm in Sam Phran district, Nakhon Pathom.
