The establishments listed below are part of the MICHELIN Guide's selection of over 6,000 hotels. Each of them has been chosen by our experts for its style, service and unique personality – and each can be booked via the MICHELIN Guide website and app.
1. WHITE RIVER COTTAGES, Crete, Greece
A relatively remote corner of Crete is where you’ll find White River Cottages, a collection of stone houses in a valley called Aspros Potamos. It’s a refreshingly tranquil and pastoral experience, with access to some wild countryside and a fine mix of rough-edged rustic charm and contemporary boutique hotel polish.
2. THE JAMES NEW YORK NOMAD, New York City, USA
The stunning 1904 Beaux-Arts building at 29th and Madison has been a hotel, under one name or another, for well over a century. But thanks to the fine work of designer Thomas Juul-Hanson, it’s hard to imagine it ever looked fresher than it does in its 21st-century incarnation as the James New York NoMad.
3. ZOKU PARIS, Paris, France
Zoku’s vision of versatile, efficient, modern apartment style hotel life was born in Amsterdam, and then spread to Copenhagen and Vienna. One might wonder if their signature blurring of the line between business and pleasure – their merging of work and life – would fly in a city like Paris. The evidence suggests that it does.
4. VOLGA, Mexico City, Mexico
If there’s something a bit Eastern Bloc about this concrete tower, it’s probably down to the associations of Brutalism, or maybe the Tarkovsky-like tableau of its minimalist interior atrium garden. But Volga, the hotel, is a pure expression of today’s Mexico City – a city that’s as cosmopolitan as it is unique.
5. NOBU HOTEL MARRAKECH, Marrakech, Morocco
So swift and successful was the Nobu expansion into the hotel world that the mere mention of a Nobu Hotel Marrakech immediately calls to mind a complete picture: an enormously stylish, architecturally distinctive luxury hotel with a pronounced Japanese accent and a first-rate food and beverage programme.
6. SOHO BEACH HOUSE CANOUAN, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
It’s hard to imagine founder Nick Jones had any idea the Soho House concept would take him as far as St. Vincent and the Grenadines. But here we are; the London-born, now global members’ club phenomenon has expanded not only to New York and Los Angeles but to Hong Kong, Istanbul, and Canouan Island.
7. CAN MASCORT ECO HOTEL, Palafrugell, Spain
'Can Mascort' makes its home in a restored 17th-century building in the historic centre of this medieval town. In the course of the renovations, the hotel’s proprietors have made this old house a model of sustainability, using only local, natural materials, and making conscious choices to minimise energy use.
8. THE SOURCE HOTEL, Denver, Colorado, USA
Denver’s River North arts district is the city’s latest urban redevelopment success story, and the Source Hotel is an important part of its evolution. It’s an ultra-contemporary building on the site of an old iron works, and within its walls are 100 modernist-inspired rooms that wear this industrial heritage on their sleeve.
9. CONTESSINA HOTEL, Zakynthos, Greece
Just off the west end of Tsilivi Beach, on the island of Zakynthos, the Contessina Hotel is visually impressive from the start. It's a modern, somewhat minimalist affair – and a proper luxury boutique hotel as well, complete with its own spa and wellness centre, as well as a substantial central swimming pool.
10. COOLROOMS PALACIO DE LUCES RELAIS & CHÂTEAUX, Luces, Spain
The name of the CoolRooms brand rather undersells what you’ll find at the Palacio de Luces; a gorgeously restored 16th-century palace in verdant Asturias that ventures into contemporary design, resulting in an eclectic visual experience that speaks of a multitude of influences.
