The MICHELIN Guide Germany 2019 selection was announced today at the Star Revelation event in Berlin. The big news of the day was the announcement of five new two-star restaurants and 37 new one-star restaurants in the country's red guide.
Purs in Andernach, which opened in February 2018 under head chef Christian Eckhardt, has succeeded in bringing about the rare achievement of entering the guide with two Michelin stars. Three of the newcomers to the two-star family are in Bavaria: Luce d’Oro, which is part of Elmau Castle in Krün; the restaurant Sosein. in Heroldsberg; as well as Alexander Herrmann by Tobias Bätz in Wirsberg. Ox & Klee in Cologne also received two stars in this year's guide. In total, the MICHELIN Guide Germany 2019 recommends 38 restaurants with two stars.
The 10 three-star restaurants maintained their distinctions this year. The number of one-star restaurants rises to 261, with 37 new additions, including: CODA Dessert Dining, Ernst, SAVU and Kin Dee in Berlin; Lakeside, bianc and 100/200 in Hamburg; Tian in Frankfurt; and Koch und Kellner, Der Schwarze Adler and Waidwerk in Nuremberg. This adds up to an all-time high of 309 starred restaurants in Germany.
Additionally, inspectors have distinguished 39 new restaurants with a Bib Gourmand, which guides the way to establishments that prepare simple yet skillful dishes with good quality and good value. (In Germany, that means a three-course meal must be available for a maximum of €37.) The 2019 edition recommends a total of 424 Bib Gourmand establishments.
Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the MICHELIN Guides, says, "This 2019 selection confirms the ongoing positive progress of German gastronomy. This success is due to both the existing guard of well-established and experienced chefs, as well as a new generation of young and talented chefs with their innovative and fresh ideas."
