Meet the Artist Behind our 3 MICHELIN Star Reveal

Jared Emerson harnesses his creativity to promote good while doing good.

It’s been said that cooking is art on the plate. Cuisine brings people together while simultaneously expressing culture and history through food. Bridging these together is artist Jared Emerson, who is the mastermind behind tonight's 3 MICHELIN Star reveal.

For Emerson, his art captures the essence of his subject. Often painting personalities and famous faces meant to inspire, Emerson's greatest inspiration comes from working with organizations such as Premier Arts Collective, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the Make-A-Wish  Foundation while using his gifts for healing and hope.

But for tonight's MICHELIN Guide Ceremony, Emerson had the tremendous task (and honor) of revealing our newest 3 Star spot, Smyth by chef John B. Shields. Below, the Michigan native, who presently resides in South Carolina, takes us on a deep dive on his creative process, what it took to create tonight's piece, and how art benefits the mind and soul.

What inspired you to become an artist?

I believe we are all artists, so becoming one was already there. I was fortunate enough to realize my God-given gift at an early age. My inspiration, first, comes from above. Knowing that my work impacts others helps motivate me through my creative process.

How has your relationship with art changed as you progressed with your career?

Drastically. Understanding the importance of how art stirs emotions and impacts every level of culture allows me to have a deeper relationship with my art and those impacted by it.

What motivates you on the canvas?

The pressure of creating a complete piece of art in just minutes and the music.

You’ve painted/performed for many celebrities/organizations, which one has been the most memorable? Why?

That’s a tough one because they all are memorable, but one that comes to mind when I think of the kindness of others would be painting at the Bear Club in Jupiter, Florida, with Jack Nicklaus. He was someone that spent time with me and shared some great stories and really showed that he appreciated my approach to my craft as an artist.

In your opinion, what similarities do art and cooking share?

Make no mistake, chefs are artists! Food not only offers visual stimulation but provokes all our senses. There are no rules in creating food or art.

What makes art such a good form of therapy?

The artist can express so much without using words and heal in such a way that is unexplainable. Deep emotions are often difficult to orally describe, but art offers a higher level of expression.

What's an art tip that everyone can employ into their everyday lives?

Always create, because we were created to do so. Every person is far more capable of achieving great things than they often believe. Understand what you are good at and really lean into that gift. Art reaches everyone.

Do you cook?

No, but I do love to eat :)

Favorite MICHELIN Guide restaurant?

That’s an impossible question to answer. Perhaps, I need to go on a tasting tour and then get back to you in a year.

Favorite art-related show, book, or program?

I am very competitive by nature. I love watching Food Network cooking competitions because it shows the versatility of different chefs and their ability to create and showcase their art visually as well as tastefully.
