Live Update: 6 Brand-New Restaurants Listed In The MICHELIN Guide Taipei & Taichung – June 2022

The MICHELIN Guide Inspectors reveal some of their latest favorite additions via live updates monthly.

MICHELIN Guide Inspectors spend all year on the road uncovering the best restaurants to recommend and reveal some of their latest favorite additions monthly ahead of the annual launch event.

Restaurants in Taipei and Taichung will be added to the selection monthly, on the second Wednesday of every month. The newly selected venues will feature on both the website and the app. There’s a special entry “New” created for those newly-listed restaurants and those restaurants will be highlighted with a ‘New’ symbol, for easy identification.

Some of these newly recommended establishments might go on to earn distinctions at the MICHELIN Star Revelation ceremony, so follow the monthly releases closely and watch this space!

For this month, the inspectors share 6 of their favorite newly recommended restaurants in Taipei and Taichung. Why not add them to your list and give them a try?

Taipei

The group that owns Taïrroir opened this fashionably retro restaurant in the iconic skyscraper in 2021. The sweeping view is a given, and the room in brass and olive green is quite charming. The head chef from Hong Kong has over 50 years of experience under his belt and is well-versed in both contemporary and classic dishes like the juicy barbecue pork, and his take on Buddha’s Temptation, a cross between the Hong Kong and Taiwanese versions of the soup.

Kira

Taipei

The stone garden at the door exudes serenity amid the bustle. With just 10 counter seats and open only for dinner, Kira offers three set menus featuring Omi and Yamagata Wagyu – sirloin is thinly sliced and served as sukiyaki, while tenderloin is thickly sliced and grilled as steak. The Japanese chef worked in Osaka and Tokyo for over 30 years and his silky sauces strike the perfect balance in flavour, showing Western influences.

Wamaki

Taipei

The head chef of Amis descent hailing from Taitung has over 20 years of experience in Japanese cuisine. At Wamaki, he creates kappo dishes over charcoal fire, using mostly Taiwanese produce and native herbs such as prickly ash seeds and Maqaw pepper. The chef even travels to his hometown on weekends to pick his own herbs. For lunch and dinner, there is only one set menu, but the chef can tailor the menu for you with advance notice.

Yuan Wei

Taipei

Tucked down a small alley behind the train station and without a proper sign, this eatery with over 70 years of history and just four tables is easy to miss. Even the interior feels more like a wood carving store than a restaurant. The menu is easy to navigate, with only 20-odd choices. Stir-fries are the must-try items – Yuan Wei fried rice, and pork jowl, characterised by remarkable wok-hei. Cash only and expect a long wait at peak hours.

Taichung

This simple eatery run by the owner couple opened its doors in 2019. The full-flavoured food is mostly Jiangzhe and Taiwanese in origin, perfect with steamed rice. Signatures include baby Napa cabbage with shiitake mushrooms and crab roe, and braised boneless chicken with taro. As the kitchen is manned by the husband only, allow some time for your food to arrive. Reservations via social media and pre-ordering of dishes are highly recommended.

PI

Taichung

The room exudes a relaxed vibe with its faux-industrial décor, semi-open kitchen and full-length windows. The owner named it Pi as a circle with no beginning or end is a good metaphor for the boundless possibilities in cooking. The head chef has worked in some prestigious kitchens in Taiwan, and his 6-course prix-fixe menu offers excellent value, featuring novel creations in European traditions, and one speciality from the charcoal grill.
