Stephanie Hsu’s Guide to LA (In This Universe, Anyway)

The Oscar-nominated actress from "Everything Everywhere All at Once" shares her hometown favorites.

As a critically acclaimed actress, Stephanie Hsu often finds herself at delicious restaurants, one way or another. Growing up in the Los Angeles area and a current resident, she's no stranger to enjoying good food.

On-camera, she jumps into character at MICHELIN restaurants. In Laid, it was Vancouver’s per se Social Corner. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, it was LA’s Vibiana at Redbird. In Joyride, it was in Vancouver's Chinatown near Bao Bei, and on Blood Alley, right outside of L’Abattoir.

Off-camera, she jumps into tasty plates at other spots recognized by MICHELIN. Below, see Stephanie Hsu’s hometown favorites (in this universe, at least).

What are some of your favorite restaurants in LA?

n/soto is my favorite favorite restaurant. It’s high end without being overly stuffy. I love the mix of izakaya and sushi, and the chefs do such an incredible job of folding in what’s in season. Everyone who works there is lovely and it’s my favorite spot for a special occasion or treat.

Kato takes all the Taiwanese food I grew up and loved and elevates it into a whole different dimension. I love the food, the staff, the art on the walls. It is certainly for special occasions, but it is very special indeed! P.S. I'm not sure if the Kato wine they cultivated is on the menu, but if it is, it is very good!

Where is your favorite hidden gem in the city?

AZAY. I love a Japanese breakfast, and this place feels like the coziest, non-fussiest, most delicious-iest spot for just that.

What's your go-to spot for take-out?

Atwater Farmer’s Market. When I first moved to LA, all my new friends I made were friends I made at this market. Specifically, the farmers.

Do you have a favorite theater?

Huron Substation. My friend Alden Ehrenreich opened up this gorgeous theater that was a part of the old Los Angeles railway station. It is such a hub for artists and writers to hear their work out and truly feels like a slice of New York theater in LA. I feel grateful that it exists and I’m so excited for its future as a nourishing space for artists.

Where do you like to shop?

Hightide Store DTLA & Sonia Boyajian. The world of Sonia is a gentle soft magical delight.
