Florida’s Hotel Selection Is Starting to Sizzle

On April 18, 2024, all the new MICHELIN Stars were announced in Florida. Which makes this the perfect time to check in on some of our newest additions to our hotel selection in the Sunshine State.

The 2024 MICHELIN Stars for Florida are out, highlighting the most impressive restaurants in Miami, Tampa, and Orlando. And just as the state’s culinary scene is flourishing, so too are its hotels. Miami leads the way, continuing to grow beyond its reputation as an oceanside party palace, blossoming into a bona fide hub of arts and culture.

That’s enabled Miami and its environs to secure the most spots in our Florida hotel selection, but the rest of the state is awake, and unique hotels are popping up in places that previously didn’t have the need or the desire, with many more in the works. Check out our full selection in Florida, here. And below, enjoy some of our newest hotel additions to the MICHELIN Guide in the Sunshine State.

Lake Nona Wave Hotel
Lake Nona Wave Hotel

Lake Nona Wave Hotel

Orlando

Orlando’s Lake Nona Wave Hotel is known for its technology, and we’re not just talking about its gently curving silhouettes; it’s among the first to feature smart windows, which dim automatically in response to bright sunlight, as well as Toto toilets and, in selected rooms, high-tech beds and sleep-quality apps. Just as important, from our perspective, is the fact that its interiors are, if anything, even more distinctive in their design than the hotel’s memorable exterior.

Mayfair House Hotel & Garden
Mayfair House Hotel & Garden

Mayfair House Hotel & Garden

Miami

Mayfair House Hotel & Garden offers a different perspective on a familiar destination. It’s set neither in glitzy Miami Beach nor in a Downtown Miami skyscraper but in Coconut Grove, the upscale village-like arts and entertainment district along the coast a few minutes to the southwest of downtown. The original Mayfair is an uncommonly stylish 1980s icon by architect Kenneth Treister, and it’s been reverently updated by Goodrich NYC into the hotel you see today: the Mayfair House Hotel & Garden.

Arlo Wynwood
Arlo Wynwood

Arlo Wynwood

Miami

The first hotel to open in the emerging Miami neighborhood of Wynwood is a familiar name from New York and Miami Beach: Arlo Wynwood Miami is not a cult Sixties folk singer but an outpost of the up-and-coming boutique hotel group, joining the three Arlos in Manhattan and the related Nautilus in Miami Beach. Like its siblings it’s a design-focused, youth-oriented hotel, and it adds a bit of extra color, in a tribute to its Arts District location.

ROOST Tampa
ROOST Tampa

ROOST Tampa

Tampa

New York boutique hotels expand to Miami Beach all the time, so why shouldn’t the Philadelphia-based purveyor of boutique-hip serviced apartments set up a Florida branch in downtown Tampa? The immediate location is Tampa’s redeveloped Water Street district, and the building, by Morris Adjmi Architects, is a new build, but one that pays homage to the industrial heritage of the neighborhood; the upper floors are private residences, and the lower ones belong to ROOST Tampa.

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa
Little Palm Island Resort & Spa

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa

Florida Keys

The most distinctive feature of the Florida Keys might be the Overseas Highway, the stretch of U.S. Route 1 that makes the trip from Miami to Key West into a routine car trip. But Little Palm Island is anything but routine. Guests arrive at the relatively ordinary Little Torch Key and transfer to a yacht named for Harry Truman for the final hop to an island that was one of the former president’s favorite haunts, and is now the only private island resort in North America: Little Palm Island.

The Marquesa Hotel
The Marquesa Hotel

The Marquesa Hotel

Florida Keys

In all the noise being made about Miami, it’s easy to forget that the classic Florida holiday destination still lies two hours’ drive from the mainland. Like any travel town in America, Key West has its charmless and overdeveloped side; but Old Town, home to the incomparable Marquesa Hotel, belongs to the locals, and to history—this is the Key West of Hemingway, of Tennessee Williams, an oasis of old-world refinement at the edge of the continent.

Palihouse Hyde Park Village
Palihouse Hyde Park Village

Palihouse Hyde Park Village

Tampa

The Palisociety hotels may have been born in California, but the brand’s colorful, eclectic, European-influenced style travels remarkably well; while Palihouse Hyde Park Village bears an obvious family resemblance to the other hotels of the same name, it looks perfectly at home on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Hyde Park is an upscale residential district just across the river from downtown Tampa, and Hyde Park Village is an open-air mixed-use development with shops, restaurants, and, thanks to Palisociety, a remarkably stylish boutique hotel.

Beach House Miami
Beach House Miami

Soho Beach House Miami

Miami Beach

Any decent hotel is in a dialogue with its location; obviously what works in central London would be absurd in South Beach. But the Soho House concept has proved to be eminently adaptable, even while it retains its core appeal — for an illustration you couldn’t do much better than Soho Beach House Miami. It’s set right on Collins Avenue, surrounded by hotels of every size and style, but none of them are quite like this one, a private members’ club whose highly covetable services and facilities are the reason for the lodging’s existence.

Kimpton Hotel Palomar
Kimpton Hotel Palomar

Kimpton Hotel Palomar South Beach

Miami

The fourth Kimpton hotel in the greater Miami area is the Kimpton Hotel Palomar South Beach, which stands discreetly along the banks of Collins Canal, in the Sunset Harbour neighborhood on the Biscayne Bay–facing side of the island. In the typical Kimpton manner the Palomar is attractive, but wears its stylishness lightly, and goes out of its way to feel approachable.
