The 2024 MICHELIN Stars for Florida are out, highlighting the most impressive restaurants in Miami, Tampa, and Orlando. And just as the state’s culinary scene is flourishing, so too are its hotels. Miami leads the way, continuing to grow beyond its reputation as an oceanside party palace, blossoming into a bona fide hub of arts and culture.
That’s enabled Miami and its environs to secure the most spots in our Florida hotel selection, but the rest of the state is awake, and unique hotels are popping up in places that previously didn’t have the need or the desire, with many more in the works. It’s set neither in glitzy Miami Beach nor in a Downtown Miami skyscraper but in Coconut Grove, the upscale village-like arts and entertainment district along the coast a few minutes to the southwest of downtown. The original Mayfair is an uncommonly stylish 1980s icon by architect Kenneth Treister, and it’s been reverently updated by Goodrich NYC into the hotel you see today: the Mayfair House Hotel & Garden.

MiamiThe first hotel to open in the emerging Miami neighborhood of Wynwood is a familiar name from New York and Miami Beach: Arlo Wynwood Miami is not a cult Sixties folk singer but an outpost of the up-and-coming boutique hotel group, joining the three Arlos in Manhattan and the related Nautilus in Miami Beach. Like its siblings it’s a design-focused, youth-oriented hotel, and it adds a bit of extra color, in a tribute to its Arts District location.

TampaNew York boutique hotels expand to Miami Beach all the time, so why shouldn’t the Philadelphia-based purveyor of boutique-hip serviced apartments set up a Florida branch in downtown Tampa? The immediate location is Tampa’s redeveloped Water Street district, and the building, by Morris Adjmi Architects, is a new build, but one that pays homage to the industrial heritage of the neighborhood; the upper floors are private residences, and the lower ones belong to ROOST Tampa.

Miami BeachAny decent hotel is in a dialogue with its location; obviously what works in central London would be absurd in South Beach. But the Soho House concept has proved to be eminently adaptable, even while it retains its core appeal — for an illustration you couldn’t do much better than Soho Beach House Miami. It’s set right on Collins Avenue, surrounded by hotels of every size and style, but none of them are quite like this one, a private members’ club whose highly covetable services and facilities are the reason for the lodging’s existence.

MiamiThe fourth Kimpton hotel in the greater Miami area is the Kimpton Hotel Palomar South Beach, which stands discreetly along the banks of Collins Canal, in the Sunset Harbour neighborhood on the Biscayne Bay–facing side of the island. In the typical Kimpton manner the Palomar is attractive, but wears its stylishness lightly, and goes out of its way to feel approachable.
