This first edition for the South Korean capital sees 24 restaurants awarded with stars, including two 3-Michelin-starred establishments, three 2-starred restaurants and 19 one-starred restaurants.
The two 3-Michelin-starred names are La Yeon and Gaon – both fine dining temples of Korean cuisine. This is especially notable as it is the first time Korean gastronomy is taking its pride of place next to its neighbouring culinary giants China and Japan. In fact, of the 2-starred restaurants, two of them serve Korean cuisine (Kwon Sook Soo and Gotgan), while the remaining serves French contemporary (Pierre Gagnaire).
These establishments are part of a 140-strong list of restaurants which includes the 36 eateries conferred Bib Gourmand status earlier this month.
“I think it's widely seen as one of the hidden gems of world cuisine,” says Michael Ellis, International Director of The Michelin Guides. “There's so many things going on: brining, pickling, fermenting, frying, barbequing, seasoning... great techniques.”
Michelin will be announcing the 2017 Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau later this week.
