MICHELIN Guide Aichi-Gifu-Mie 2019 Selection

68 restaurants in the Tokai region have received Michelin stars while 102 establishments have been recognised with a Bib Gourmand.

The MICHELIN Guide Aichi-Gifu-Mie 2019 has just been released. This is the first edition of the guide to be launched in Tokai region of Japan and encompasses the Aichi, Gifu and Mie prefectures. A total of 68 restaurants received Michelin stars, with three among them attaining the coveted three-Michelin-star status.

The awards ceremony was held at the Chubu Centrair International Airport in Tokoname city in the Aichi prefecture and in attendance among the 750 industry representatives were CEO of Nihon Michelin Paul Perriniaux, governor of Mie prefecture Eikei Suzuki and Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Shozo Kudo.

Two restaurants in the Aichi prefecture have received three Michelin stars: Sushi Ueda (右江田) in Nakagawa-ku, Nagoya and Japanese restaurant Hijikata (土方). One restaurant in the Mie prefecture received three Michelin stars: sushi restaurant Komada (こま田), located in Ise.

In addition, 14 restaurants have received two Michelin stars, most of which offer Japanese cuisine. These include Kaiseki Hachisen (懐石 八泉), Sekine (せき根), Hasshokan (八勝館), Myo-an (明庵) in Nagoya, Yanagiya (柳家) in Mizunami city, Ryoutei Susaki (料亭洲さき) in Takayama city, Kaiseki Kamimura (懐石かみむら) in Ise city and Kappou Nishimura (割烹西むら) in Yokkaichi city. Sushi restaurants Sushi Shunbi Nishikawa (鮨旬美西川) and Sushi Hijikata (鮨土方) in Nagoya as well as tempura specialist Tempura Niitome (天風良にい留) in east Nagoya have also received two Michelin stars.

Outside of Japanese cuisine, French restaurants La Vagabonde and Reminiscence in the central district of Nagoya as well as Chinese restaurant Shosaichuka Hiro (小菜中華hiro) in Gifu city have also received two Michelin stars.

The guide also sees 51 restaurants with one Michelin star and 102 Bib Gourmand establishments, a recognition of a good meal with good value for under 5000 Yen. The Bib Gourmand selection includes eateries serving Nagoya’s famed fried cutlets and hitsumabushi unagi.
