If you have no time to sit down for nasi lemak or bak chor mee for breakfast, then grab one of these hawker snacks for a bite on the go. From pork buns to fritters, these Michelin-listed hawker snacks are your best bet.

1. Teochew Handmade Pau

One of the few stalls in Singapore that make and sell traditionally made steamed buns, Teochew Handmade Pau kneads its signature char siew pau by hand. It also makes other dim sum items which are convenient to nibble on. With outlets in Toa Payoh, Tekka Hawker Center and Bedok Marketplace, its newest branch, Teochew Handmade Pau is known for its buns with puffy, soft skin, and flavourful and juicy kong ba pork underneath. Caster sugar prevents the bun’s skin from dimpling and the recipe has been updated with pork that is less fatty to cater to health-conscious customers.
2. J2 Famous Crispy Curry Puff

A snack of South-east Asian origin, curry puffs are known for their flaky deep-fried skin. When bitten into, the miniature pie reveals chicken and curry with potatoes anda sliver of hard-boiled egg for a satisfying and filling snack. The owners of J2 Famous Crispy Curry Puff make 500 curry puffs each day by hand to ensure the highest culinary quality possible. For its sardine puffs, only bigger sardines are and they are seasoned with a special blend before being cooked.
3. Lim Kee (Orchard) Banana Fritters

Tucked away in the famous Maxwell Food Centre, Lim Kee (Orchard) Banana Fritters has fritters that have a crispy skin encasing a custard-like filling made from ripened pisang raja. There is a sharp contrast between the sweet and acidic flavours of the filling. The softness of the texture melts in your mouth, making the snack a delight to eat. Yet, it does not taste soggy due to the crispiness of the skin. Lim Kee (Orchard) Banana Fritters will be closing at the end of the year, so be sure to eat its fritters while you still can.
4. Rojak, Popiah & Cockle

Hit up this veteran stall in Kadayanallur Street selling only three types of food, for freshly made-to-order popiah. While its rojak and cockles are also popular, its spring rolls are perfect for breakfast to go. They contain generous amounts of peanuts, lettuce, cabbage, tofu and other ingredients according to your preference. You can also choose eggs, seafood or meat. A sweet sauce blends the flavours of the different ingredients together without making the skin soggy.

5. Tiong Bahru Lien Fa Shui Jing Pau

If you’re craving some dumplings, Tiong Bahru Lien Fa Shui Jing Pau at Alexandra Village Food Centre will be right up your alley with what are known as crystal dumplings because of their almost transparent skin. The traditional Teochew-style dumpling come with a crunchy turnip filling. Don’t forget the chilli paste for a spicy kick. The stall also offers sweet dumplings filled with yam paste or red bean paste at extremely affordable prices.
