6 Local Produce Farms To Visit In Singapore

Farm-to-table dining isn’t so out of reach in our urban city.

To be sure, the mention of Singapore doesn’t conjure up visions of open spaces and idyllic countryside, but you might be surprised to find that there is no lack of good local produce being farmed and harvested right here on our island city. From fruits and vegetables to fungi, fish and frogs, many of these working farms in Singapore are open to the public for visits. Here are 6 farms to plan your next trip to.

Bollywood Veggies
Take a meandering drive into the Kranji countryside to visit one of the most well-known organic farms in Singapore, Bollywood Veggies. There are lots to do here: take a walk around the farm and check out The Kitchen Garden where local vegetables like long beans, eggplant and chilli padi are grown, or the Medicine Beauty Garden where you’ll find various herbs and spices. Take a rest by the picturesque lotus pond, and stop for lunch at Poison Ivy Bistro to taste some of the farm-to-table produce. 100 Neo Tiew Road.

Jurong Frog Farm
This 1.2-hectare Lim Chu Kang farm is home to almost 20,000 bullfrogs. The farm regularly conducts educational farms tours, and produces frog meat and hashima in dried and ready-to-drink bottled forms to restaurants and supermarkets islandwide. There are guided tours and “hands-on-frogs” sessions for brave souls which you can book here, or visit The Royal Frog Shop on the farm for frog swag like fresh or frozen frog meat, and a starter tadpole kit for the kids. 56 Lim Chu Kang Lane 6.

Oh’ Farm
Oh Chin Huat Hydroponic Farms is one of the pioneering and most successful hydroponics farms in Singapore. It is a working farm producing vegetables like kai lan, Chinese spinach and xiao bai cai, although there is a whole range of tour itineraries you can sign up for for about $4 to $10 a person. These include a guided hydroponics farm tour, a tour through the herb garden, plant-your-own herb classes, and a visit to the Butterfly Lodge which houses the butterflies that pollinate their crops. 14A Bah Soon Road.

Hay Dairies
It’s fun for the whole family at Singapore’s only goat farm where you can visit between 9 to 10.30am daily to view the goat milking session and purchase alfalfa hay to feed the goats, then pick up bottles of fresh goat milk and handmade goat milk soap to take home. Also available are guided tour packages for larger groups of 10 or more for $4-$7 per person. 3 Lim Chu Kang Lane 4.

Mycofarm
Mycofarm is Singapore’s only specialist mushroom grower producing naturally-grown, chemical-free mushrooms for consumers, as well as innovative mushroom products like mushroom chips, bak kwa, and yup, mushroom soap. Guided tours are available daily for $4.50 to $6 per person where you can visit Grow Rooms to see how oyster mushrooms and shiitake are cultivated on logs in cold rooms, then harvested and packed. Pop into the Mycobrewer café for lunch and try the house brews of Black Leopard Shiitake beer and stout. 9 Seletar West Farmway 5.

Smith Marine Kelong Restaurant
Although the working fish farm part of this kelong isn’t accessible to public, there’s still plenty to do here before you settle in for a seafood feast at the restaurant. Smith Marine Kelong is situated off Changi Point Ferry Terminal, close to Pulau Ubin, and to get there is a 10-minute boat ride that costs $100 per boatload of up to 12 people. So, gather some friends and family and plan a day-trip for this kampong-throwback experience where you’ll get to fish for your own dinner and enjoy some sun and sea breeze.
