New York is never not a hot destination. Just consider the city’s ongoing hotel boom. While flagship brands make their big Manhattan debut, smaller independent brands are infusing the outer boroughs with fresh, creative energy—and plenty of stylish accommodations. With so many dynamic new properties opening, there is something for every taste and budget.
Our list includes a wellness oasis in the heart of Manhattan, a newcomer full of collegiate charm on Roosevelt Island, and a quietly luxurious hideaway overlooking the High Line.
Aman New York
Midtown
The Aman name used to be synonymous with secluded resort destinations and the Aman Tokyo was proof that the top of a city-center skyscraper could offer its own sense of seclusion. Aman New York is the next chapter in the evolution of this top-tier hospitality brand: a self-contained world of luxury right in the heart of Manhattan, on 57th Street at 5th Avenue, replete with a 25,000-square-foot spa—a cocoon of serenity in the heart of the hubbub.
The Hotel Chelsea
Chelsea
The Hotel Chelsea has a storied past of creative guests and residents—Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, and Bob Dylan, to name just a few. Who better to usher the legendary property into its next chapter than hotelier Sean MacPherson (of the Bowery, the Jane, the Ludlow and others) along with hotelier partners Ira Drukier and Richard Born? Today, the hotel’s amenities include a penthouse spa, a Franco-American bistro, and a lobby bar serving sophisticated cocktails and shareable plates. Rooms have been completely updated while maintaining the property’s romantic, bohemian roots.
Graduate New York
Roosevelt Island
The Graduate hotels tend to play up the collegiate spirit of the college towns they call home—the brand’s Roosevelt Island location is no different, splashed in reds and outfitted with an impressive library that nods to the local Cornell Tech campus. Graduate Roosevelt Island is the island’s only hotel and features 224 guest rooms and suites, two restaurants, and a modern fitness center.
The Ned NoMad
NoMad
The Johnston Building on Broadway, dating back to 1903, once housed the NoMad Hotel, which played a key role in making the NoMad (that’s North of Madison Square Park) neighborhood a destination for modern-day New Yorkers. Today marks another chapter in the property’s evolution as the home of The Ned NoMad, a luxury boutique hotel and members' club, and a sibling to the original Ned in London. The hotel’s 167 bedrooms maintain a sense of Jazz-era glamor.
Pendry Manhattan West
Manhattan West
For their first hotel in New York, Pendry — the urban luxury-hotel imprint of the Montage Resorts brand — is staking out new territory in Manhattan West, part of the ambitious Hudson Yards Redevelopment. Perched on the north tip of the High Line, occupying an undulating glass tower by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Pendry Manhattan West has been instrumental in shifting the city’s luxury-hospitality center of gravity a bit further towards the Hudson.
