The least expensive Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy

If you were under the impression that Michelin-starred restaurants were beyond your budget, you may be in for a surprise, as the selection of address recognised by the 2024 Michelin Guide highlight those that offer menus for under 75€.

Eating in a Michelin-starred restaurant is, without doubt, synonymous with quality... and not necessarily one that requires excessive expenditure, as many one-star restaurants offer tasting menus for less than 75€. And, in some cases, lunch menus for around 30€. We have selected over twenty of these that you’ll find across the length and breadth of Italy.

Osteria degli Assonica, Sorisole, Lombardy

Business lunch menu with a choice of two main courses and coffee, served Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays - 25€ (with dessert 30€). For dinner, a choice of two main courses - 70€.

Located in the hills around Bergamo, this elegant restaurant is the fulfilment of the Manzoni brothers’ dream. Here, they offer a choice of à la carte dishes and three menus. The latter includes a business lunch that changes every Monday, and features dishes such as salmon trout with artichokes and a green pepper sauce, and veal cheeks. If you’re not constrained by time, the six-course tasting menu is a delicious ode to the bounty of the land.

The restaurant’s signature dishes are also available on the à la carte, such as Piccola Sinestesia of vegetables with a citronnette and honey sauce – a homage to chef Alain Passard – and the shrimp and calamari salad with rocket and lemon zest.

Contemporary is the word we would use to best describe this osteria in Pontinique, in the province of Latina. The space is modern and welcoming with wood tables and an open kitchen, in which the ambition of chef Fabio Verrelli D'Amico is to cook with ingredients sourced from local artisans. Local farms provide his meat (buffalo meat, lamb and rabbit), as well as fish – but never less than 1.5kg in weight to ensure that the catch and consumption are sustainable. His three tasting menus are created from these ingredients. The “preface” features three main courses that change very regularly, and includes both fish and meat, with wine pairings suggested by sommelier Sara Checchelani. The wine list boasts no fewer than 350 labels, including a good selection from the Lazio region.

Trattoria al Cacciatore - La Subida, Cormons, Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Two 5-course menus available daily for lunch and dinner - 75€.

The Sirk family runs this tiny corner of paradise located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region close to the Slovenian border. The visionary founder of La Subida (which is synonymous with gastronomic excellence, warm hospitality and relaxation) is Josko Sirk, a vinegar producer. For several years, chef Alessandro Gavagna has been at the helm in the kitchen of the Trattoria al Cacciatore, which is without question a gastronomic reference in the region, and which showcases the culinary bounty of the Collio region. In the opinion of our Michelin inspectors, the shin of veal roasted in a bread oven then attractively presented and carved in the dining room is worthy of special mention.

Arnaldo, Rubiera, Emilia-Romagna
“Arnaldo” tasting menu, including a boiled and roast meat trolley, available daily - 75€.

The Emilian cuisine served at Arnaldo is as authentic and traditional as you’ll find anywhere, which is hardly surprising given that the restaurant is part of Italy’s gastronomic history as the first restaurant to be awarded a Michelin star, way back in 1959! Don’t be surprised, therefore, if the cuisine on offer here celebrates its culinary past on trolleys teeming with starters, desserts and meat dishes, the latter the restaurant’s true proud and joy. The boiled and roasted meat trolley is the main constituent of one of the menus here, featuring superb slow-cooked cuts of beef and pork served with mashed potatoes and traditional “mostarde” (a type of chutney) and sauces.
