New York during the holidays is one of the most fabulous times of the year. Yes, the city fills up with tourists, but it allows locals the opportunity to savor some of the gastronomic world's hautest boîtes. And leave it to Jean-Georges Vongerichten to serve up style and deliciousness in equal parts at his latest venture, Four Twenty Five.
Quietly opening in late December at the corner of 56th Street and Park Avenue, the building was designed by Lord Norman Foster, and once inside, you'll feel transported out of midtown and into a modern, elegant, and calm setting. The rich wood tones and serene hues act as a clean base while a 24-foot artwork by American artist Larry Poons graces the wall of the bar adjacent to the lounge aptly dubbed, "The Poons Bar."
However, ascend the stairs on the plushest carpeting ever to the mezzanine dining level, and you're greeted by visual harmony at eyeline and above. The open kitchen allows the 80 diners to have their own take on dinner-theatre, while the 231 Foster + Partners designed ORSA fixtures add an airiness to the space with a decidedly stylish finish. “Four Twenty Five is very much of its place and encapsulates the spirit of Midtown Manhattan," said Foster. "Every detail has been carefully considered, from the bespoke furniture and lighting fixtures to the works of art, creating a truly memorable setting for lunch or dinner on the world’s grand boulevard of commerce.”
Those taking in the scene were as glam as the surroundings—think Martha Stewart, David Rockwell, Melba Wilson, along with gastronomic titans including Daniel Boulud, Gracious Hospitality's Simon Kim (who's also preparing for a midtown opening), and Mercer Street Hospitality's John McDonald.
But it wasn't just foodies taking in the ambiance and festivities. A fashionable flock including International Best Dressed List arbiter Amy Fine Collins, actor David Burtka, model Martha Hunt, photographer Craig McDean, and countless others joined the revelry to congratulate Vongerichten and culinary director Jonathan Benno. The best part for guests? Getting to sample the incredible bites on offer including charred, locally sourced duck breast, foie gras with blood orange terrine, and sinfully delectable desserts.
And when it was time for guests to re-enter the frenetic energy of the streets, a sense of overwhelming calm flooded everyone much like the restaurant's vibe and interior.
Four Twenty Five is open Tuesday - Saturday for dinner service. Breakfast and lunch are coming later this month. For more information, visit 425parkrestaurant.com.
