For this year’s California ceremony, chefs convened from across the Golden State to the picturesque shores of the San Francisco Peninsula.
First greeted by the sounds of bagpipes, top culinary talent filled The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay ballroom, including The French Laundry’s Thomas Keller, Addison’s William Bradley, and Benu’s Corey Lee.
At the ceremony, guests were treated to perfectly-carved jamon by Fermín, luxe caviar from Petrossian, and mouth-watering paella from the Ritz, as well as delectable bites from newly-minted One Stars R|O-Rebel Omakase, Meteora and Hilda and Jesse. Complementing the dishes were all kinds of exquisite beverages provided by Franciacorta, Jose Cuervo, Ernest Vineyards, evian, St. George Spirits, Betty Booze, and Betty Buzz.
To kick off the evening’s awards, emcee AJ Gibson, The San Francisco Peninsula’s John Hutar, and Visit California’s Lynn Carpenter welcomed everyone to this year’s celebration.
Trevin Hutchins of Aphotic took home the first award of the night for Exceptional Cocktails. Franciacorta President Silvano Brescianini then presented the Sommelier Award to Ian Krupp of Anajak Thai. Rachel Sillcocks of Hilda and Jesse was recognized for Outstanding Service, and the restaurant itself received its first MICHELIN Star.
Excitement grew to a climax with the announcement of new Stars. In the Golden State, a total of seven restaurants became new members of the One Star family, including Kiln whose chef John Wesley also received the Young Chef Award.
Next up, Vespertine led by Jordan Kahn achieved a double honor – a Green Star for sustainability, as well as Two MICHELIN Stars. Aubergine and Sons & Daughters also earned coveted Two Star recognitions, each up from One Star last year.
To top off the night, chefs from returning Three Star restaurants took the stage as the audience watched in awe, and then all chefs were invited up for a final, bubbly toast. Paired with plenty of pictures with Bibendum, California’s culinary talent smiled amidst the electric energy of the room.
