MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 Bib Gourmand Selection: Street Food

Michelin is pleased to reveal 24 new Bib Gourmand street food establishments in night markets, of which 15 are appearing in the Guide for the very first time.

Following the unveiling of 12 new Bib Gourmand restaurants last week, Michelin is pleased to reveal 24 Bib Gourmand street food establishments in night markets, of which 15 are appearing in the Guide for the very first time. This brings the total number of Bib Gourmand dining establishments to 58 in The MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 selection.

The Bib Gourmand is a distinction that signifies “good quality, good value cooking.” To qualify for this distinction, establishments must offer a three-course meal for a fixed price not exceeding NT$1,300 (around $42).

3 Night Markets Make Their Debut in the Guide

The MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 Bib Gourmand Selection sees three night markets make their debut in the guide. They are Gongguan Night Market, Yansan Night Market and Huaxi Street Night Market, with each having its signature hawkers.

At Gongguan Night Market, there seem to be a never-ending queue at Hsiung Chi Scallion Pancake or Lan Chia GuaBao, which is famed for its soft buns stuffed with braised pork, ground peanut, coriander and pickles. Diners can even decide their preferred amount of fat in the slab of pork.

At Yansan Night Market in the Datong District, three stalls are newly included in the Bib Gourmand selection. One of the street stalls, Cabbage Rice and Pork Rib Soup, doesn't have a shop sign and will close before 7:00 p.m. if the dishes are sold out early. Da-Qiao-Tou Tube Rice Pudding has been around for 50 years and is famous for its sticky rice and lean or fatty pork paired with its homemade sauce. Shih Chia Big Rice Ball, which first started in 1964, is famous for its glutinous rice balls with juicy pork fillings.

Also new to the guide is one shop from Huaxi Street Night Market in the Wanhua District. Hsiao Wang Steamed Minced Pork with Pickles in Broth is known for its “black gold” pork rice as well as famous minced pork with pickled cucumbers for more than 40 years. The black pepper adds a special flavor, which matches well with the clear broth.

2 Night Markets with 4 Bib Gourmand Stalls

Nanjichang Night Market and Raohe Night Market are home to four Bib Gourmand hawkers. New to the guide in Nanjichang Night Market is Sung Ching Taiwanese Burrito that combines more than 10 fillings including bean sprouts, shredded carrots and radish, and fried pork that are wrapped in a popiah roll, delivering sophisticated textures and flavors. Another hot favorite at Nanjichang Night Market is an unnamed clay oven roll stall. While its sweet pastry is the stall's best-loved item, some people also love its savory pastry or long shaobing.

Also new to the guide in the Raohe Night Market is A Kuo Lu Wei that is famous for its wide range of marinated meat, offal and beancurd. (Duck wings, pork uterus and baby sweetcorn are recommended.) Another entrant from Raohe Night Market is Beef Noodles and Beef Entrails Soup. Its assorted side dishes and dried noodles are also must-eat items.

Other new Bib Gourmand street food entrants include Fang Chia Shredded Chicken With Rice at Ningxia Night Market. A simple bowl of shredded chicken served with rice, and a velvety tofu in marinade will certainly warm your stomach as well as your heart. Chung Chia Sheng Jian Bao at Shilin Night Market offers buns with crispy bottoms that are filled with cabbage or pork. Good Friend Cold Noodles is particularly famous for its fragrant sesame sauce.

Linjiang Street Night Market has two new stalls listed in this year’s guide: Tien Hsiang Stinky Tofu that is known for its juicy cubes and aroma, as well as Yu Pin Yuan Iced and Hot Tangyuan that serves its signature dish of hot tangyuan (sweet glutinous rice dumplings) on shaved ice, which creates an interesting contrast in one's palate.

The MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 includes a total of 58 Bib Gourmand establishments and the complete selection, including the Michelin stars, will be revealed on April 10. (For more information about MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 Gala Dinner, please visit here.)
