Live Update: 3 Brand-New Restaurants Listed In The MICHELIN Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan & Kaohsiung – January 2023

The MICHELIN Guide Inspectors reveal some of their latest favorite additions via live updates monthly.

MICHELIN Guide Inspectors spend all year on the road uncovering the best restaurants to recommend and reveal some of their latest favorite additions monthly ahead of the annual launch event.

Restaurants in Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung will be added to the selection monthly, on the second Wednesday of every month. The newly selected venues will feature on both the website and the app. There’s a special entry “New” created for those newly-listed restaurants and those restaurants will be highlighted with a ‘New’ symbol, for easy identification.

Some of these newly recommended establishments might go on to earn distinctions at the MICHELIN Star Revelation ceremony, so follow the monthly releases closely and watch this space!

For the first month in the new year, the inspectors share 3 of their favorite newly recommended restaurants in Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Why not add them to your list and give them a try?

Cheng Jia

Taipei

After honing his skills in an establishment of classic Taiwanese cooking for over 20 years, the head chef opened his own restaurant with only three tables in an alleyway hectic with street food stalls. Taiwanese all-time favourites are given a new spin here and his chicken soups are hugely popular. Try also sautéed shrimps with scrambled eggs in lettuce wraps. Book a table on social media and discuss the menu with the owner in advance.

A Wen Rice Cake

Tainan

Amid century-old shops on the same street, A Wen opened its doors only in 2016. But it has quickly won the hearts of many with their rice cake made from scratch. Rice milk is mixed with three sweet potato starches for the right consistency before steamed, sliced and fried till golden. Try the Zhao Pai variety for rice cake in bamboo shoot pork sauce. The over-easy egg is the icing on the cake (pun intended); try also their house-made chilli sauce.

Jai Mi Ba

Tainan

Its full-length windows and open kitchen may not look like your typical noodle shop. The owner-chef has honed his skills in French cuisine for over 10 years and opened this minimalistic shop in his hometown for Taiwanese noodles to mingle with French techniques and sauces. The short menu shows promising creativity and it changes every week, except seared ox tongue with noodles in truffle sauce, and cheese caramel flan that are always available.
