Beyond the Table: Rafie Chua and Jonathan Tan of Plane and Bevel

A celebration of the farmers and kitchen craftsmen who work their magic beyond the dining table.

Every chef knows that his work is only ever as good as the ingredients and tools he works with. Our Beyond the Table video series takes you beyond the pomp and grandeur of the restaurant dining room and into the lives of local farmers and kitchen artisans - the ones who toil quietly at their craft to help make your dining experience complete.

Not many Singaporeans would trade in a comfortable job in finance to - quite literally - get their hands dirty, but for one 28 year old, it was a natural calling. Melbourne University graduate Rafie Chua is a third -generation carpenter who started his custom furniture business Plane and Bevel in 2013 with the aim of rejuvenating and revitalising an oft-overlooked traditional craft with his modern design philosophy and contemporary aesthetics.

Childhood pal Jonathan Tan, 30, a culinary school-trained chef, joined the business after returning from San Francisco and the youthful duo today produce everything from tables and shelves for Instagram-friendly cafes to intricate plates and serve ware for top restaurants across Singapore.

Get to know the two young men and what drives them to do what they do in our latest Beyond the Table episode below.
