Michelin has announced the entrants of the 2018 guide at a live event at The Brewery, near the Barbican, in east London. Making waves is The Araki, a Japanese sushi bar in Mayfair, which jumps up from two stars to three, making it the UK’s first three-star Japanese restaurant. “With its nine-seater counter, The Araki has gone from strength to strength. When Mitsuhiro Araki moved to London from Tokyo in 2014 he set himself the challenge of using largely European fish and his sushi is now simply sublime,” comments Michael Ellis, International Director in charge of the MICHELIN guides.
In other three-star news, the celebrity chef’s flagship Restaurant Gordon Ramsay retains its ranking despite the departure of chef patron Clare Smyth. Claude Bosi’s Bibendum—named after the Guide’s white mascot and situated in the ‘Michelin House’—leaps right it into the Red book with two stars.
French Michelin-starred chef Anne-Sophie Pic’s first foray into London, Le Dame de Pic wins a star
Other notable awards saw French Michelin-starred chef Anne-Sophie Pic’s first foray into London, La Dame de Pic and Andrew Wong’s modern Chinese restaurant A.Wong pick up one star each. Elystan Street by Philip Howard (formerly of two-starred The Square) also received a star.
In Scotland, Loch Bay is the only new entrant with one star while Wild Honey Inn in Ireland takes the honour of being the first pub to win a Michelin star.
