Christmas Desserts Almost Too Pretty to be Eaten

Here are six desserts that take the cake.

Now that the turkey has been carved, wine bottles emptied and the wishbone broken, there's the official matter of desserts. Fruit and log cakes have both longtime serving members on the Christmas dessert table but if you're looking to up the ante this Christmas, here are our five sweet treats guaranteed to impress your party guests.

End on an elegant note
The Sengana Strawberry Noel from Mandarin Oriental ($80) is all your sophisticated dessert dreams come true. It's not too sweet or overtly rich, which we appreciate. Its strawberry compote paired with a ginger-hazelnut moelleux and Manjari light mousse tones the tartness down and rounds the flavours out. They've also got on their Christmas dessert menu a delicious matcha yaki-imo (Japanese sweet potato) cake shaped like a Christmas tree, traditional stollens, fruit cakes and yule logs. mandarinoriental.com
For a touch of whimsy
Your dinner guests will whip out their phones for this. Antoinette's Snow Globe ($15 for small. $55 for large) is a picture perfect end to a meal. The dessert is served in a clear, circular container filled with a cream cheese mousse, almond nougatine and finger sponge soaked in kirsch, a cherry brandy made with morello cherries. And if you're worried about it coming across a tad rich, there's the ribbons of tangy raspberry marmalade and passionfruit to help cut through the cream. antoinette.com.sg
For a taste of luxury
Sebastien Cocquery-Beraud, executive pastry chef of Fairmont Singapore & Swissôtel The Stamford, recreated his memories of home this Christmas. The Périgord’s Black Forest Yule Log ($67) captures the flavours of a classic black forest cake and amped it up with a dark chocolate mousse, bitter chocolate butter and dark cherries . Contemporary classics
For logs cakes that toe the line between classic and contemporary, there's Fullerton Hotel's yule logs ($69) that comes in four flavours - Traditional Black Forest, Rosella, Tropicana and Mont Blanc. Customers can also purchase from them panettones, fruity minced pies and gingerbread houses. fullertonhotels.com
For desserts with local flavour
Cut open this festive-looking cake and a familiar shade of green will reveal itself. Andaz Singapore, a new hotel by Hyatt, bakes their pandan chiffon cakes in a variety of flavoured glazes. Customers can choose from bandung (rose syrup), durian, coconut, black sesame and naturally, pandan. andazsingapore.com
For the chocolate lover
Here's another exquisite offering from Antoinette's Christmas Wonderland dessert selection. A Walk in the Forest ($55 for petit, $110 for grande) is an elaborate sweet treat designed to wow. It comes in two sizes, petit and grande, so customers may order according to the size of their parties. antoinette.com.sg
