Live Update:6 Brand New Restaurants Listed in the MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau–September 2022

The MICHELIN Guide Inspectors reveal some of their latest favourite additions via live updates.

Since the launch of the MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau 2022 in January this year, our inspectors have been out and about in search for new addresses worthy of a place in the MICHELIN Guide selection.

While the MICHELIN Guide distinctions — Stars, Bib Gourmands, and Green Stars — will be revealed during the annual launch ceremony, our MICHELIN Guide inspectors have decided to share some fresh new restaurants that have caught their eyes (and tastebuds), making them new additions to the next MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau selection.

On the second Wednesday every other month, the new restaurants that will be part of the upcoming MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau will be featured in both the MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau website and the MICHELIN Guide mobile application.

How to spot the new restaurants? They will be highlighted with a "New" symbol. Some of these newly recommended establishments will go on to earn distinctions at the MICHELIN Star Revelation ceremony, so check them out and add them to your list of places to dine at!

Here are 6 of the MICHELIN inspectors' favourite new additions for September 2022 in Hong Kong!

Ho Lee Fook

Walls covered in gilded maneki-neko, mahjong tiles, pop art and red Chinese floral motif make this a bold, unorthodox spot for a fun night out. Of course, the 80s Canto-pop soundtrack is also a proud expression of its local DNA. The open kitchen on ground level is a spectacle to behold and their creative Cantonese cooking harnesses bold distinctive flavours and wok hei. Try their crispy three-yellow chicken with sand ginger dip, and other wok-fries.

Heimat

Heimat translates as “homeland”.  After working in some prestigious kitchens, the German owner-chef Peter Find reinterprets classics from his home country with quality ingredients, dexterous care and much sophistication. The 6-course tasting menu takes diners on a journey across Germany with flavours from his childhood memories. A shorter 3-course menu is available at lunch. And who can resist the gummy bear trolley at the end?

Nagamoto

When Kashiwaya shuttered its doors in 2021, many lamented the loss. Fortunately, it reincarnated a year later at the same spot as Nagamoto, helmed by none other than Chef Teruhiko Nagamoto himself. With only counter seats, all diners can watch his well-honed skills in action. Just one omakase menu is offered, with kaiseki courses crafted out of ‘shun’ ingredients in peak condition, embodying his deep knowledge.

Sabah

Sabah, a staple of Wan Chai’s restaurant scene for 18 years, shuttered its doors in 2019 before reopening here with the same kitchen team. Both the room and the menu are downsized, but signatures like bak kut teh, beef rendang, and seafood laksa remain, tasting just like before. Boneless Hainan chicken rice boasts bouncy skin and velvety juicy flesh. Even the trio of dips and pearl rice are also hard to find fault with.

Testina

Aptly named after its signature pig’s head dish, Testina is the collaboration between the Milanese trattoria Trippa Milano and a local hospitality group. Championing a nose-to-tail philosophy, the kitchen team serves every part of an animal to great effect. Besides pig’s head, expect to see tripe, bone marrow and veal tongue on the menu. For an authentic taste of Trippa Milano’s cooking, try homemade tagliatelle with duck ragù.

Fishball Man (To Kwa Wan)

Though local snacks like shaomai and cheong fun are offered, its eponymous speciality remains the most popular. Besides the spicy variety, the springy and flavourful white fish balls drizzled in chilli oil are unmissable.
