Our Inspectors’ Favourites for Good Value in Newcastle upon Tyne

Check Out Our Bib Gourmands in the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2020

This iconic city, on the banks of the River Tyne, started life as a Roman fort before playing a key part in ship-building during the industrial revolution. Today, it’s widely known for its lively nightlife but it’s also making its mark on the culinary scene; it now boasts more Bib Gourmand awards for good quality, good value cooking than anywhere else outside of London.

We take a look at the Michelin Inspectors’ favourite spots for good value dining.

Broad Chare
Local chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne owns this quayside pub close to the famous Millennium Bridge. The ground floor is a cosy, rustic place, perfect for some ‘Geordie Tapas’ and a regularly changing ale or two, while upstairs, in the dining room, they serve hearty pub classics.

Violets
Abbie Atkinson (wife to Kenny, of House of Tides fame), runs this sweet little place. It offers something for everyone: hearty breakfasts, pastries, light lunches and, in the evening, a selection of tasty bistro-style dishes with a Northumbrian heart.

Staith House
Staith House is set in the heart of the bustling North Shields fish quay. Come early morning to see the market stalls full of Craster kippers, locally caught crab and other North Sea delights. Seafood is the obvious choice but there are also Northumbrian meats to satisfy the carnivores.

Route
Staith House’s younger sister is set on a steep street leading from the city’s castle down to the bustling quayside. It has a laid-back bistro style and a rustic feel, and offers well-priced, gutsy small plates which showcase lesser-known British produce.

Haveli
This friendly, welcoming Indian restaurant sits in an affluent city suburb, not far from the airport. The menu offers a selection of dishes from around India and makes good use of local produce. The chef’s specials are a popular choice, particularly with the loyal band of regulars.
