Bar Valette, Shoreditch
EuropeanIsaac McHale from Two-MICHELIN-Star The Clove Club is behind this East London restaurant that replicates the trappings of a classic French bistro. Tables are packed closely together, the décor has a rustic simplicity (blackboard menu, exposed brick, paper tablecloths) and the cooking draws on traditional European staples, mostly from France and Spain.
Canteen, Notting Hill
ItalianThe long-standing London tradition of non-bookable restaurants continues with this likeable Italian spot on Portobello Road. Long queues outside either add anticipation or irritation, depending on your personality, but nobody could argue with the stripped-back, flavour-packed dishes once you’re inside. It’s no surprise to learn it comes from the team behind The Hero and The Pelican.

Long Chim, Soho
ThaiAustralian-born chef David Thompson – renowned in foodie circles as one of the great advocates of Thai food around the world – is behind this now-permanent spot in the very heart of the city. The authentic cooking takes inspiration from all over Thailand, offering plenty of spice and zingy flavours. The atmosphere mirrors the cooking with a great buzz.
Restaurant Gordon Ramsay High, City of London
Modern CuisineOne of the capital’s most talked-about openings of recent months is this 60th-floor chef’s counter that pairs one of the best views in the city with equally top-shelf produce, including native lobster and Cornish turbot. The Gordon Ramsay name carries plenty of weight and his team of chefs deliver on the promise, with a detailed approach and skilled craft brought to each dish.
The Waterman’s Arms, Barnes
Modern BritishAttention, West Londoners! The Waterman’s Arms should be at the top of your list when you’re next looking for a good gastropub, especially if you love generously priced, impressively cooked food and a prime Thames-side location. Try to grab a seat on the first floor by the window for river views, then be sure to order the baked malt custard for dessert.
