Michelin Guide-obsessed foodies now have one more Asian destination to head to to check off their dining lists.
The inaugural 2017 Michelin Guide Shanghai was launched on 21 Sept, with a total of 35 stars awarded to 26 restaurants in the cosmopolitan Chinese city. A further 25 eateries received the Bib Gourmand recommendation for offering a good value meal for under RMB200 (S$41).
The guide also anointed newly crowned two-Michelin-starred eatery Canton 8 as the cheapest two-Michelin-starred restaurant in the world. A meal there costs just RMB48 (S$9.80) per diner on average.
A total of 18 restaurants received one Michelin star, including names such as vegetarian restaurant Fu He Hui by prominent Chinese chef Tony Lu, 144-year-old Shanghainese restaurant Lao Zheng Xing, and private dining experience, Tai An Table. Hong Kong-founded regional restaurant chain Lei Garden received one star each for its outlets in Shanghai’s IFC and iapm shopping malls respectively.
In the two-star category, popular favourites such as innovative restaurant Ultra Violet by French chef Paul Pairet, 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana by Italian chef Umberto Bombana (whose branch in Hong Kong has three Michelin stars), and L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon by the world's most Michelin-decorated chef Joel Robuchon made the cut. Singaporean restaurant chain Imperial Treasure earned two stars for its Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine flagship restaurant on the Bund.
The only three-starred restaurant in the guide this year is T’ang Court within luxury hotel, The Langham. Its sister restaurant in Hong Kong has three Michelin stars in the 2016 Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau.
The 2017 Shanghai guide marks the global restaurant guide’s maiden foray into mainland China, and its fifth Asian territority after Japan, Hong Kong and Macau and Singapore. The first ever Michelin Guide edition for Seoul will be released by the end of the year.
