This Portuguese Spot Brings the Flavor for $20 and Under

Our Bib of the Week is Petiscos in San Jose, California.

In case you need a refresh, the Bib Gourmand distinction is awarded to restaurants that offer multi-course meals at reasonable prices. And while all are unique and the “price” varies from country to country, the standard for quality remains the same.

That’s why every Friday, we’re highlighting our Bib of the Week; where to go, what dish to order, the best time to stop by, and everything in between. So whether it’s the Thai and Malaysian delights (think curry puffs and Thai tea pudding) in Santa Monica or Italian food with a side of jazz in the Big Appleour selection of Bib Gourmand spots will leave both you and your wallet satisfied.

In Portuguese, Petiscos means snacks. And with almost 60 dishes on the menu, you’ll most definitely have something to snack on. So come with your friends and family, because these authentically prepared dishes highlight the flavors of Portugal, but also the convivial spirit—dishes like the broa (traditional cornbread), braised pig ears, and grilled sardines are perfect for sharing.

But don’t take our word for it, check out what our Inspectors had to say here, and below, learn from the team on what you need to know before you go.

What was the idea behind Petiscos?

The goal was to showcase authentic Portuguese cuisine in a more casual, fun place with a large menu option.

What is your goal with Petiscos?

We wanted Petiscos to be a neighborhood restaurant where we could offer an experience as close as possible to being in Portugal. Many of our guests are planning on visiting Portugal or have returned from a trip there and Petiscos is an opportunity to continue enjoying the food they had while visiting Portugal.

How would you describe your approach to food and cooking?

Simple, authentic, and as close to grandma's cooking as possible!

How did you conceive of a menu that is delicious, yet good value?

The menu is extensive and tries to reflect some of the most iconic and traditional dishes from Portugal. That's why olive oil, garlic and onion are used as a base for so many dishes. And, of course, the diversity of spices and influences that were brought to Portugal from all over the world.

What is the dish to order at Petiscos?

With almost 60 dishes on the menu, it's difficult to recommend only one, especially because the idea at Petiscos is to try several of them (since they are small portions). However, the octopus, duck rice, grilled sardines, beef tongue and pig’s ear should not be missed! And of course, a "pastel de nata" for dessert!

Regardless of what you order though, each dish will be as if you are eating it in Portugal. It truly is a true authentic experience.

What price range can customers expect at Petiscos?

Most dishes are priced between $9 and $20, which allows a guest to taste several of them for a reasonable amount of money.

When is the best time to stop by?

We always recommend coming on a Monday or Tuesday. It will give you a chance to meet our neighbors and regular guests.
