Upscale Dim Sum in San Francisco for Under $40

Traditional techniques combined with contemporary ingredients at Yank Sing.

"The intention was to develop traditional recipes and techniques to make dim sum that will consistently represent the finest found in Southern China," explains Vera Chan Waller and Nathan Waller. That intention—combined with a desire to elevate Chinese cuisine and making it more accessible—is what led to Yank Sing's eventual move to San Francisco's Financial District in 1974.

Since then, the restaurant has become a staple for approachable dim sum made with traditional techniques and quality ingredients.

"Our goal is to continue our family's legacy by making dim sum approachable for everyone while maintaining and furthering the association of Yank Sing with traditional elegance and quality."

But don’t take our word for it, check out what our Inspectors have to say here, and below, learn from the family about what you need to know before you go.

What is the dish to order at Yank Sing?

We would recommend any of our traditional steamed dim sum items (Har Gow, Siu Mye, BBQ Pork Bao) and our version of Shanghai soup dumplings.

Although we are known for our traditional dim sum, we have also developed a number of more contemporary vegan steamed dumplings (snow pea shoot, spinach, savory vegetable and shiitake mushroom dumplings), which have become increasingly popular.

What price range can customers expect at Yank Sing?

$30-$40 per person.

When is the best time to stop by?

11am -12pm or 1pm-3pm to avoid the lunchtime rush!

How did you conceive of a menu that is delicious, yet good value?

We have mostly steered away from exotic ingredients and instead, have focused on the quality of ingredients as well as the execution of techniques.

How have you been able to maintain your standards with the cost of ingredients going up?

Maintaining standards is one of our main goals, so we have reduced the number of items on our menu rather than compromising on taste or quality.
