SAVE THE DATE: The MICHELIN Guide Taipei & Taichung 2020 Will Be Revealed On August 24

Join us on August 24 to find out — first hand — the names of the restaurants setting Taiwan at the forefront of Asia’s leading culinary destinations.

Michelin today announced that MICHELIN Guide Taipei & Taichung 2020 will be officially launched in Taichung on August 24.

For the first time, the 2020 selection of the MICHELIN Guide expands its reach beyond Taipei to include the city of Taichung, a destination with a rich dining culture and remarkable vitality.

Spotlight on Taichung

From the traditional local suncake delicacies to iconic Taiwanese bubble tea and the creative street snacks in the city’s renowned Fengjia night market; from luxurious fine-dining restaurants to the casual, open-air tea houses and cafes full of independent artistic flair, Taichung has always had a unique and diverse food culture that marries tradition and innovation.

“Over the past three years, the MICHELIN Guide has discovered that there are many cities with gourmet potential in Taiwan aside from Taipei. With the bigger scope of the 2020 MICHELIN Guide and Selections, we look forward to showing the world the richness and diversity of Taiwanese food,” Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides said.

To announce the launch of the latest guidebook edition, Michelin will organise a press conference at the National Taichung Theatre, located in Taichung's 7th Redevelopment Zone in the Situn District, an important cultural and artistic neighbourhood in Taiwan. The latest selection of the MICHELIN Guide Taipei & Taichung 2020 will be revealed live in the presence of invited chefs, food media and influential restaurant industry personalities to honour and recognise their contribution to the industry.

The building designed by renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito is an artwork in itself. Dubbed the ‘Sound Cave’ by locals, the structure’s network of curvaceous walls and stairwells lure visitors through a network of performing arts theatres, galleries and social activity spaces designed to
closely integrate art into people’s daily lives.

Said Nicolas Achard, Managing Director of Michelin Food & Beverage Asia: “Through this event, we hope to continue the MICHELIN Guide’s mission of highlighting the restaurant industry and celebrating its heroes in a very special venue, while promoting business recovery by encouraging gourmands to support their favourite restaurants in these challenging times.”

Celebrating Taiwan’s diversity

The MICHELIN Guide has always celebrated the vibrant culinary cultures of each of its guidebook destinations by highlighting local and international cuisines from all over the world. In the MICHELIN Guide Taipei released in April last year, 24 restaurants received a Star distinction, while 58 eateries and street food stalls were recognised with the Bib Gourmand recommendation, which distinguishes value-for-money establishments that offer a three-course meal for a fixed price not exceeding NT$1,000.

In total, the 161 dining addresses in the MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 spanned a wide range of cuisine styles that distinctly emphasise the abundance of Taiwan’s food culture, the talent and creativity of local chefs, and the uniqueness of the local customs and ingredients.

“The dining scene in Taipei is evolving at a great pace. Our inspectors were not only impressed by the standard of local Taiwanese cuisine, but also by the global influences being imported by the very talented and innovative local chefs, which together will no doubt entice food lovers from around the world,” Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides, said at the time.

The launch of the MICHELIN Guide Taipei & Taichung 2020 will be livestreamed on the official MICHELIN Guide Taiwan Facebook page and on MICHELIN Guide Asia YouTube page from 1pm on August 24, where the public can find out — first hand — what sets Taiwan at the forefront of Asia’s leading culinary destinations.
