In Pictures: Highlights Of The MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 Gala

Last evening, chefs of Michelin-starred restaurants, industry insiders and well-suited diners were out in full force at the MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 Gala dinner held at the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei.

The MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 was launched on April 10. The second edition of the guide in Taipei saw a total of 24 establishments receiving Michelin stars. Among these, one restaurant made its debut in the guide with two Michelin stars, two restaurants were elevated from one star to two stars this year, while four new one-starred restaurants were added to the selection, showcasing the dynamism of Taiwan’s dining scene.

After the press conference in the morning, chefs of Michelin-starred restaurants, industry insiders and guests were invited for the MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2019 gala dinner organised by Robert Parker Wine Advocate. To celebrate the achievements of the chefs and their teams, five art pieces by local Taiwanese artists were chosen and exhibited at the gala dinner and five chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants around the region were invited to present dishes inspired by these works of art — a nod to chefs as artists of the culinary world, putting their creativity and work on a plate.

The five guest chefs include Lam Ming Kin of one-Michelin-starred Longtail in Taipei, Atsushi Takahashi of two-starred Kashiwaya in Hong Kong, Tse Man of Taipei’s one-starred Ya Ge, Fabrice Vulin of two-starred The Tasting Room in Macau and Sebastien Lepinoy of two-starred Les Amis in Singapore, who created one-of-a-kind edible works of art inspired by their given paintings.

At the cocktail reception prior to dinner, guests mingled over Nespresso cocktails created by one-Michelin-starred Longtail, participated in games organised by FunNow and had their pictures taken at a photo booth supported by TaiSun.

The dinner opened with fresh breads by the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, accompanied by TaiSun’s ChefOil extra virgin olive oil and as guests were treated to unique creations by the five chefs, they were plied with refreshments by Badoit and evian water, exceptional wines by Penfolds and Juyondai Gold Label sake. Entertainment came in the form of a ballet light show set to live classical music and song performances by Taiwanese songstress Cindy Yen. To conclude the night’s exciting line-up, coffee-themed desserts were served alongside fragrant cups of Nespresso Lungo Decaffeinato coffee or tea.
