The 2024 Bib Gourmand for Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City Is Out!

The Bib Gourmand-awarded restaurants for Da Nang - newly covered city this year, the second edition of the MICHELIN Guide in Vietnam - will be unveiled on June 27, when the complete selection of the MICHELIN Guide Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City & Da Nang will be officially released.

One week prior to the full release of the 2024 MICHELIN Guide Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City & Da Nang, Michelin is pleased to reveal this year’s Bib Gourmand list for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In the second edition of the MICHELIN Guide in Vietnam, the Bib Gourmand selection for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City features a total of 42 establishments - including 18 eateries in Hanoi (of which, 5 newcomers), and 24 in Ho Chi Minh City (of which, 8 newcomers). This illustrates a significant increase, compared to 29 entries in the inaugural edition last year. The Bib Gourmand restaurants for Da Nang, the latest Vietnamese destination to have recently joined the MICHELIN Guide portfolio, will be unveiled on June 27th, during the MICHELIN Guide Ceremony for Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City & Da Nang, to be hosted in Ho Chi Minh City.

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides, commented: “With no less than 13 restaurants newly receiving a Bib Gourmand in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City this year, our 2024 selection is an invitation sent to every gourmet to discover the charm, quality and endless diversity of Vietnamese cuisine. Historical or a bit more modern, highly rooted in the tradition or much more innovative, these restaurants our Inspectors loved discovering and adding to the Bib Gourmand selection are the guarantee to enjoy authentic culinary experiences at a moderate, attractive price and to discover Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City lifestyles through one of their most important assets.”

Within the MICHELIN Guide restaurant selection, the Bib Gourmand distinction, symbolized by the iconic “Bibendum” or “Michelin Man”, highlights dining establishments that stand out for their good quality, good value cooking. Therefore, Bib Gourmand restaurants are much followed by those users of the Guide who are seeking affordable meals out without compromising on quality or flavor.

In total, the 2024 Bib Gourmand selection for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City encompasses a diverse range of 7 cuisine types: Vietnamese, noodles, European Contemporary, street food, vegetarian, Cantonese, and Latin American. This is a testament to both cities’ vibrant culinary scene, where different good-quality cuisine is available at affordable prices.

In Hanoi, the 5 new entrants making it to the Bib Gourmand list, are: ▪ Bún Chả Chan, a small bun cha shop operating for over 10 years, serving not only the typical caramelized pork meatballs on rice vermicelli, with a tangy, sweet broth; but also offering grilled pork belly or minced beef in betel leaf as options; ▪ Luk Lak, a restaurant serving traditional Vietnamese fare with a unique character - such as Sapa's pork belly dipped in herbal sauce grilled to perfection and served with mac mat leaves that cut through the richness and enliven the flavors.

Miến Lươn Đông Thịnh, a 40-plus-year-old shop that offers a menu revolving around eel -- as in eel noodles, eel congee and eel soup; ▪ Mr Bảy Miền Tây, a small shop well-known for its signature crispy banh xeo pancake with various fillings, and also offering hot pot, spring roll, rice noodles and barbecues as its strong suits; ▪ Phở Khôi Hói, a street food eatery offering pho, or beef noodle soup, with many cuts to choose from, including rare cuts like beef heel muscle.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the 8 newcomers on the Bib Gourmand list are: ▪ Bánh Xèo 46A, a restaurant famous for its huge Vietnamese signature crêpes stuffed with mung beans, bean sprouts, pork and shrimp - paired with pulled chicken salad, as well as chargrilled pork, beef, squid, and prawns; ▪ Bò Kho Gánh, a street food venue offering its famous beef stew, known as bo kho, served in a stone bowl, with an option to pair with either bread, noodles, or rice; ▪ Bún Bò Huế 14B, a take-out only stall specializing in noodle soup topped with sliced beef, beef tendon and fish fillet; ▪ Mặn Mòi (Thu Duc City), a Vietnamese restaurant, offering an extensive menu spanning regional specialties from all over Vietnam - including salads, soups, mains, grilled dishes, desserts, as well as clay pots and hot pots.

Nhà Tú, a Vietnamese restaurant offering home-style cooking rarely found elsewhere - such as steamed snails stuffed with minced pork, and mixed veggies dressed in a fish sauce reduction with pork crackling; ▪ Tiệm Cơm Thố Chuyên Ký, a Cantonese eatery that prides itself on its double-boiled silkie chicken soup, which has been made the same way since 1948, and offers other must-try dishes like a steamed rice bowl with beef, chicken or Cantonese preserved pork sausage; ▪ Vị Quê Kitchen, a restaurant offering modern Vietnamese vegan dishes - including nem vuong, a variation of deep-fried rice paper parcels from Hai Phong city, filled with assorted mushrooms and glass noodles, and bun vi que, noodle soup topped with herbs and tofu puffs.

Sol Kitchen & Bar, which was already recommended last year, is now moved from MICHELIN Selected to Bib Gourmand. It is a restaurant serving Latin-American recipes like marinated steak served with chimichurri sauce, BBQ ribs glazed with fish sauce, and whole roasted chicken served with mojo sauce - apart from its eclectic and appetizing à la carte menu, featuring empanadas from Mexico, scallop ceviche from Peru, and burrata salad from Italy.

The full 2024 restaurant selection of the MICHELIN Guide Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City & Da Nang – including MICHELIN Stars and Special Awards - will be unveiled on June 27.
