Theo Rossi's New York: The Penguin Star Dishes on Gotham's Best Slices and Kid-Friendly Gems

From Staten Island pizza to lush green spaces, native New Yorker Theo Rossi reveals his top choices throughout the Big Apple.

This autumn’s must-watch? Max's The Penguin, set in Gotham City—a gritty stand-in for New York. And who better to give us the inside scoop than Staten Island’s own Theo Rossi. The Italian, Spanish, Lebanese, and Syrian actor made waves with roles in Sons of Anarchy and Emily the Criminal, and with his latest role as Dr. Julian Rush, Rossi returned to his hometown for filming. Taking in all the city has to offer, Rossi has a few go-to's, including pizza in Staten Island, facials by Dr. Sturm, and museum strolls at the Frick. For the actor, each New York neighborhood offers infinite possibilities and a distinctive edge.

Below, check out Rossi's New York, and make sure to discover more insights from our Inspectors, chefs, and celebrities.

As a born-and-bred New Yorker, you must have tons of restaurant and food picks. Which spots make your list of favorites?

Empellón in Midtown is owned by my friend Dave Rodolitz. The restaurant’s location, the layers of flavor, and atmosphere make it the total package. Do not pass up the avocado dessert.

Denino’s Pizzeria in Staten Island is the best pizza anywhere in the world. Denino’s is owned by my friend Mike Burke, and he’s carrying on an 87-year history of making the best pizza in New York, if not, the world. It’s a great excuse to ride the Staten Island Ferry, get a front-row seat's view of the Statue of Liberty, and head in for a Denino’s pie.

Another Staten Island spot not to miss is Don Cheech on Bay Street. In the city, Rosetta Bakery on Broadway for pizza and dessert.

Carbone 100% lives up to the hype. The food and atmosphere are exceptional.

The Union Square Farmers Market is such a special experience—a taste of the country within the city. I’ll stop through on a walk just to pick up some fresh fruit to enjoy as I go about my day.

Where do you head when you’re craving a dose of culture?

Among my favorite museums are the incredible Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York and the Frick Collection on Madison Avenue. When I want to hear great music I head to the Blue Note [jazz club].

Staying fit is an important part of an actor's job. Do you have any preferred places for staying in shape?

I’m a daily runner so the streets of New York are the ultimate gym. I ran the 2016 NYC Marathon, and it gave me a full layout of the city as a runner. Every neighborhood has a unique running route—it’s one of the best ways to see the city. And while it's not technically in New York City, Base Fitness in Jersey City is my favorite all-around gym. They have everything you could need in a gym, along with a café and parking.

Who do you trust to handle your grooming rituals?

Dr. Barbara Sturm's spa is one of my favorite spots in SoHo for a quick refresh. Who’s Next Barber Shop in Staten Island is a classic barber shop where everyone feels like family.

Do you have any favorite shopping spots in New York?

Walking and shopping in the amazing SoHo neighborhood for all of the boutiques and vintage shops. There’s always a new spot to pop in and check out. We are constantly visiting the Brooklyn Flea for one-of-a-kind items for our home. Preston Konrad Studio has the most exceptionally well curated shop in Hell’s Kitchen. He was my stylist for many years, and everything he creates or brings into his studio is so well thought out.

In the concrete jungle, finding green space is essential. Where do you go to reconnect with nature?

Walking the High Line offers such a unique view of the city. Pier 25 playground in Tribeca is the perfect way to let the kids get their energy out. It goes without saying a constant in my life is being in the best park on the planet—Central Park. This is where I try to go for daily runs, bring the kids to run around, or enjoy coffee and a walk with my wife.
