Tayko Bilbao
Bilbao, SpainSet as it is in the historic Old Town, with views of the estuary, Hotel Tayko Bilbao is nothing if not attractive – this picturesque 1924 building has not just been preserved but updated with modern architectural interventions in steel, glass and polished concrete. The result is one-part industrial and one-part classic.
San Ysidro Ranch
Santa Barbara, CA, USAThis spot on the outskirts of Santa Barbara hasn’t been a ranch for quite some time, unless one considers rustling up the likes of Audrey Hepburn and JFK to be a traditional ranching activity. San Ysidro Ranch, these days, is more like what might have once been called a health farm, albeit an exceedingly luxurious one.
Signature Cave Cappadocia
Ürgüp, TurkeyCappadocia's cave hotels are one of the travel world’s favourite stories, and it’s easy to see why. Signature Cave combines the rough-hewn walls and hand-built construction of the classic cave hotel with an extra measure of elegance, from fluted columns and antique furnishings to ornate woodwork and carvings.
One Shot Palácio Cedofeita
Porto, PortugalIn the heart of the Cedofeita neighbourhood, One Shot is housed in a restored 1831 mansion which used to welcome some of Porto’s most esteemed merchants and art patrons. Rooms are bright and contemporary with candy-striped beds and pops of blue velvet furnishings that blend seamlessly with ornate original elements.
Shinta Mani Angkor
Siem Reap, CambodiaThe historical and spiritual gravity of the temples at Angkor don’t stop Shinta Mani from indulging its playful side – this Siem Reap luxury resort was designed by Bill Bensley, known for a number of Southeast Asia’s finest hotels. Here he’s at his most eclectic, leaving his stamp – and his artwork – all over the resort.
Rock House
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos IslandsRock House is named for its setting atop a 25-foot limestone cliff along the North Shore of Providenciales. It’s a luxury boutique resort with a pronounced European accent – its white stone construction is reminiscent of certain Greek islands, and elsewhere the vibe recalls the Côte d’Azur or the Amalfi Coast.
The Funny Lion El Nido
El Nido, PhilippinesRight in the heart of El Nido town, The Funny Lion is a well-located base for exploring one of the Philippines’ most cinematic landscapes. The 50 rooms are smartly laid out, with plenty of little comforts for downtime between adventures. The all-day restaurant takes design cues from the region’s limestone cliffs.
Zhiwaling Ascent
Thimphu, BhutanOn the edge of Bhutan’s capital city of Thimphu, with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding valley, Zhiwaling Ascent is one of just a handful of high-end boutique-style lodgings in the Kingdom. Rooms are simple, spacious and light-filled, with first-rate comforts and plenty of Bhutanese flavour.
Brimstone Hotel
Ambleside, UKSet in the Lake District, among some of England’s wildest landscapes, Brimstone is blessed with spring-fed thermal baths, which feed an elaborate and theatrical spa. Here, rather than butlers or footmen, you’re attended by 'hosts', who can facilitate anything from a fresh towel to a climbing expedition.
Villa Brown Ermou
Athens, GreeceThere are four of Brown’s boutique hotels in the Greek capital, but none put you as close to the Acropolis as Villa Brown Ermou. The hotel sits a short walk from Athens' top attraction – and even closer to the main Syntagma Square and the shopping hotspot of Ermou Street, from which the hotel takes its name.
