1. Red Delicious
Possibly the most popular and widely planted apples in the United States, Red Delicious apples are easily recognisable because of their vibrant red to deep red colour, sometimes speckled with white spots. These apples have creamy and juicy flesh with a mild sweet taste and are typically softer when chewed. They also have a longer than average shelf life, making them the perfect delicious table decorations.
2. Gala
Gala apples are generally taller than the average apples. They are covered in a thin yellow to orange skin, with pinkish red stripes. One of the most extensively grown apple varieties, the Gala apple has a mildly floral and pleasant flavour. These apples are a great fruit to snack on as they are low in calories and high in water content, and also offer a good amount of vitamins A, B and C.
3. Fuji
Named after Mount Fuji, the Fuji apple was developed in Japan. It has reddish stripes, a slight reddish blush over yellow skin, and firm and creamy white flesh. A relative of Red Delicious apples, they are large and crisp apples that are super sweet, making them your best choice for a snack.
4. Granny Smith
The Granny Smith apple is perhaps the most well-known green apple. It has a mouth-watering tartness and is a lower-sugar fruit you can nibble on and use in apple pies without guilt. It has bright white flesh that is crisp in texture with an acidic, subtly sweet flavour. The apple contains a large number of cell-repairing antioxidants, which may help to add a glow to your skin.
5. Honeycrisp
The Honeycrisp apple, developed in Minnesota, is crisp and sweet as its name suggests. In fact, it has a delicate balance of the sweet and the tart, and tastes like berry. The fruit is a bright crimson colour and stores well in a cool and dry location. It is an exceptionally juicy apple due to the larger cells in the apple, making it an extremely popular apple. However, it is on the pricier side, due to the smaller number of trees producing them.
6. Golden Delicious
Ever heard of the Red Delicious apple’s yellow cousin, the Golden Delicious? Although they are only related in name, this sweet apple holds its own as a special apple. Small to medium in size, these apples are typically oblong in shape and golden yellow to pale green in colour. They have crisp, yellow flesh that is aromatic and honeyed in flavour.
7. Cripps Pink
One of the best known modern apples, the Cripps Pink apple is an attractive fruit with a pink blush overlayed on greenish-yellow undertones. It has firm and crisp flesh that tastes tangy and sweet, with notes of honey. This apple is a great source of pectin, a fibre that aids digestion. Cripps Pink apples are also low in calories and fat, making them ideal as snacks.
