It's no wonder that this aptly named newcomer has a singularly hospitable vibe—the owners, Chef Johnny Black and his wife Monique (who oversees the service team), live on the second floor of this converted Craftsman-style residence. The pair have an abundance of fine dining bona fides from some of the country’s loftiest tables, but this promising passion project aims for a more approachable, unfussy feel. The cooking draws upon French bistro fare with an occasional Spanish accent, and showcases the bounty of the California coast, in particular exceptional seafood, much of which is sourced directly from Monterey Bay. To finish, ethereal vanilla-scented canelés display an ideal balance of crisp caramelized exterior and creamy, custardy interior.
