It’ll come as no surprise that the Four Seasons group, when expanding into its second Japanese city a decade ago, snapped up an enviable piece of real estate. The chosen location was peaceful Higashiyama, one of Kyoto’s best-preserved historic districts, and the property’s centerpiece the 12th-century Shakusui-en, a pond garden which is every bit as picturesque as it sounds. Many of the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto’s spacious, sun-lit rooms and suites facing the water’s mirror-like surface framed by greenery. Rooms take inspiration from the layout of a local house, bonsai and cherry blossom motifs decorate the walls, washi paper lamps glow on side tables, and a tea master presides over the tea house in the garden.
