Prior to the presentation of the full restaurant selection of the 2022 MICHELIN Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan & Kaohsiung, Michelin is pleased to unveil today the restaurants which have been distinguished with a Bib Gourmand by the MICHELIN Inspectors.
With Tainan and Kaohsiung joining Taipei and Taichung in this 2022 restaurant selection, the total number of restaurants and night market stalls offering exceptional value-for-money gourmet experiences has reached 141.
57 restaurants and night market stalls in Taipei, 37 in Taichung, 27 in Tainan, and 20 in Kaohsiung have been recognized with a Bib Gourmand distinction.
The full restaurant selection of the MICHELIN Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan & Kaohsiung 2022 will be released on 30 August 2022 in a physical MICHELIN Star Revelation event, to be live-broadcasted at 11a.m. local time via the MICHELIN Guide Taipei & Taichung Facebook page and the MICHELIN Guide Asia YouTube channel, as well as a special gala dinner, both making their return this year.
The 2022 edition of the MICHELIN Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan & Kaohsiung will be published only in digital form via MICHELIN Guide’s official website and the MICHELIN Guide mobile app (iOS and Android) on August 30. Before that day, the selection shown will be the 2021 edition.
“Despite the pressure of the epidemic, Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung have shown great resilience in the food and beverage industry. And that is particularly clear in our 2022 Bib Gourmand selection, which definitely demonstrates the variety and abundance of the local food culture, with at least 20 cuisine types represented”, says Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides.
“Extending their research for the first time to the historic city of Tainan as well as to the coastal city of Kaohsiung, our inspectors have been impressed by their respective culinary scenes. From the famous street food which hasve been inherited by a few generations to the abundant seafood and local ingredients proudly showcased by numerous gourmet gems, Bib Gourmand restaurants all left them with strong impressions. With these two new cities joining Taipei and Taichung, the 2022 edition of the Guide further shows the uniqueness and vitality of the Taiwanese gastronomic landscape” adds Gwendal Poullennec.
Among the new Bib Gourmand selection are many restaurants offering Taiwanese cuisine specialties and typical street food. At the same time, there is also a wide variety of food cultures to explore such as Sichuan, Thai, and Vietnamese; not to mention, food cooked in different styles from dumplings to congee, to dim sum and noodles.
The Bib Gourmand distinction is annually given to restaurants that offer the best value-for-money gourmet experiences. In Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, this means that diners can enjoy a high-quality three-course meal for less than 1,000 New Taiwan dollars (excluding drinks).

6 new Bib Gourmand eateries in Taipei and Taichung respectively
In Taipei, six new eateries have been recognized with a Bib Gourmand distinction. Included in the selection is 60-year-old Yunnanese cuisine stalwart Jen Ho Yuan and Ah-guo Soup Noodles, both of which have been reselected since their relocation this year.
Chuan Mu Yuan draws the crowds with its knife-cut noodles, beef pancake rolls, and red bean paste pancakes; Little Tree Food (Da’an Road) melds American cuisine techniques with Asian flavors in its vegetarian offerings; with over 70 years of history, Taiwanese eatery Yuan Wei’s stir-fried dishes are not to be missed; meanwhile, renowned chicken specialist Chi Chia Chuang (Changchun Road) has also been promoted to the Bib Gourmand distinction.
Of the 6 new entrants in Taichung, three are Taiwanese cuisine eateries: as its name suggests, the signature dish at Bamboo Country is rice steamed in Moso bamboo; for decades, Feng Chi Goose has attracted diners from far and wide with its signature goose dishes; while Mr. Good’s full-flavored offerings, mostly Jiangzhe and Taiwanese in origin, are perfect with steamed rice.
Hello VietNam near Taichung’s ASEAN Square specializes in North Vietnamese cuisine while Xiao Chu Den offers Taiwanese light meals and snacks whose humble appearance belie its flavourful surprises. In addition, 60-year-old Hakkanese restaurant Niou Jia Juang has been reselected since its relocation this year.
Tainan boasts the most new Bib Gourmand entrants
A total of 27 restaurants in Tainan were included in the Bib Gourmand selection, making it the city with the most new additions among the four cities. Of these, 19 were chosen for their street food specialties, many of which are decades-old stalwarts well-known for their local snacks — milkfish dishes, migao (sticky rice cakes), pork heart cellophane noodle soup, shaved ice, fried Spanish mackerel thick soup, beef soup, shrimp and pork bawan, fish skin soup, calamari rice noodles, wagui (steamed rice bowl cakes), and more have become highlights of the first Bib Gourmand selection in Tainan.
Another five restaurants were recognized with a Bib Gourmand distinction for their Taiwanese cuisine offerings, with 3 of them specializing in banquet dishes and Taiwanese classics: 60-year-old institution Amei specializes in banquet classics and century-old recipes; helmed by the same head chef for 30 years, Dong Shang Taiwanese Seafood uses local produce for its classic banquet dishes and new innovations while Zhu Xin Ju presents Taiwan’s traditional banquet culture in its fixed multi-course menu. Converted from a century-old Chinese medicine shop, Po Jen Tang now offers special tonic soups; Traditional Tainan Feast (Anping) weaves Tainan’s lively culture throughout its menu and decorations.
In addition, two Tainan eateries have made the list with their signature congee dishes: customers can choose their cut of fish for the Tainan-style milkfish congee at A Hsing Congee, while at Dayong Street No Name Congee, piping hot fish broth is poured over cooked rice, milkfish slices and fresh oysters for a classic Tainanese-style savory porridge. Finally, Small Park Danzai Noodles has been around for more than 70 years, winning hearts with its taste of tradition.
20 Kaohsiung eateries receive the Bib Gourmand, with the most Taiwanese dishes
This year, Kaohsiung debuts as a new city in the Guide with 20 Bib Gourmand eateries. Of these, nine specialize in Taiwanese cuisine: Beef Chief (Zichiang 2nd Road) offers shabu-shabu hotpot with freshly slaughtered local beef; likewise, Hu Tung Beef uses fresh local beef for its hand-sliced beef in bone broth. Bo Home’s braised pork rice is a delicacy not to be missed.
Established in 1955, Joes (Gangshan) offers fresh goat meat specialties; Ke Peh’s chicken-focused menu features free-range chicken from Tainan; while goose specialty stall Le Pont serves goose dishes with a popular house condiment made by adding fried scallion to home-extracted goose fat.
Old New Taiwanese Cuisine (Jiuru 2nd Road) serves traditional Taiwanese banquet dishes with finesse; Syan Syang offers dishes made with locally grown taro and bamboo shoots, both ingredients are famous in a district in Kaohsiung where the restaurant is found; for over 20 years, Yun Lai Fang has welcomed diners with its home-style Taiwanese classics made from the freshest ingredients and homely atmosphere.
6 Kaohsiung eateries have also been selected for their famous casual fare. These include Bei Gang Tsai Rice Tube (Yancheng), Caizong Li, Cheng Tsung Duck Rice, Ciao Zai Tou Huang’s Braised Pork Rice (Ciaotou), and Duck Zhen and Hung Chi Rice Shop. Also new to the selection are 80-year Yancheng District institution Cheng’s Noodles; Lung Fang Beef Noodles, which is best known for its hand-rolled noodle knots; Pad Thai which offers the namesake Thai noodle stir-fry and Thai-style coffee, both of which come highly recommended by our inspectors; Shu Fu Chang Kwei with its layered Sichuan flavors; as well as Yang Bao Bao (Nanzhi) with its made-to-order steamed dumplings.
The Bib Gourmand restaurant selection is attached to this press release. The full list of the MICHELIN Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan & Kaohsiung 2022, including the Starred selection, will be announced on 30 August.
