MICHELIN guide launches its first Miyagi edition for 2017

Another of Japan's prefectures gets a new guide, and its first two-Michelin-starred restaurant.

Michelin has just announced its first red guide to Miyagi, Japan, showcasing the best restaurants and ryokans in the prefecture.

Sushi Yui, a sushi restaurant in Sendai city, is the only restaurant to be awarded two Michelin stars in the Miyagi guide. Japanese establishments Chimatsushima and Manmi Takahashi, in Shiogama and Sendai cities respectively, are two of 11 restaurants in the one Michelin star category. There are no three-starred esblishments in the first Miyagi MICHELIN guide.

Paul Perriniaux, Managing Director of Nihon Michelin Tire Co., Ltd, says: “We are delighted to publish a MICHELIN guide to Miyagi prefecture. Miyagi prefecture has many sightseeing spots and is a wonderful place. This edition introduces a number of cuisines reflecting Miyagi’s dining scene and we hope that many people who live in this area, along with tourists both domestic and overseas, will visit establishments listed in our guide and have a wonderful time there."

Besides the new starred restaurants, the Miyagi guide also awarded 37 eateries with a Bib Gourmand, which recognises these restaurants as offering good quality, good value cooking at affordable prices priced at 3,500JPY or less. A total of 276 restaurants were recognised in this first edition.

Michael Ellis, International Director of the MICHELIN guides, says: “This guide highlights many establishments that feature local cuisine and Miyagi specialties. We think that it is vital to include local Washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine) in the MICHELIN guide."

Miyagi prefecture thrives as Tohoku region’s economic center and boasts of many fishery harbours, such as Kesennuma port, Ishinomaki port and Shiogama port. No surprise then, that a premium selection of seafood is abundant here. The prefecture is also known for mountain vegetables and specialises in meats such as Sendai beef and Miyagino pork.
