Veering off into the wilds of Mendocino County is certainly a most delightful detour—one that culminates in the crowning dining room of the Harbor House Inn. The property is perched on a bluff, surrounded by craggy cliffs, the crashing Pacific, and if you time it just right, a spectacular sunset. The redwood-clad space is the very essence of laid-back luxury; windows frame picture-perfect views and a fireplace augments the ambience.

This is cooking that is highly original, driven by impeccable technique and devotion to sustainability. Chef Matthew Kammerer is devout when it comes to hyper-local and foraged ingredients; his efforts include utilizing produce sourced from their private organic farm. Some of his compelling creations have included a silky-smooth egg custard, dressed with trout roe and gently cooked leeks. Humble ingredients are elevated in the chef's hands, such as a luscious composition of cabbage and wild mushrooms in a light cream sauce, capped by a cabbage crisp.

Bread service includes slices of fantastic sourdough, flecked with seaweed. Then, seaweed may return in the form of ice cream with bay nut, quince, and shiso—flaunting an ingenious union of sweet and savory tastes.

The ability to forage for seaweed, mushrooms, herbs and edible weeds in our backyard and the surrounding coast and forest has shaped the cuisine to be a true local snapshot of our area. On-site chicken coop provides eggs as well as manure and compost for our gardens.
