Day 1: George Town and Armenian Street

Morning:

Start your day with a visit to the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Penang, nestled amidst lush greenery. Perched on a hill, you would need to take 513 steps to reach the top. The temple serves as a place of worship to Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war, and the sanctuary offers panoramic views of Penang, making it a culturally significant attraction for devotees and tourists alike. It is exceptionally vibrant during the annual Thaipusam Festival, which falls between mid-January to mid-February.

Then, for breakfast, head to MICHELIN-selected Tok Tok Mee Bamboo Noodle, a local gem. What sets Tok Tok Mee Bamboo Noodle apart is its commitment to preserving tradition, where the noodles are handmade using a bamboo pole, imparting a distinct flavour and texture.

The star of the show here is undoubtedly the bouncy bamboo noodles, served with an array of delectable toppings, including succulent char siu (barbecued pork), vegetables, and savoury broth. After breakfast, opt for a kopi to-go, or take a 10-minute walk to Norm Micro Roastery on Church Street for your caffeine fix. The skilled baristas here serve up a selection of brews — from espressos and lattes to pour-overs — featuring beans sourced internationally and served in Japanese-style ceramics.

Indulge in dishes such as the Baked Tempoyak (fermented durian) wrapped on threadfin fish with Beras Adan (Bario rice from Sarawak); and Buah Kulim (local jungle garlic) in three textures — infused with cocoa husk tea, buah kulim mushroom bun, and buah kulim braised peanut on fried potatoes.

Alternatively, head to Bib Gourmand Ivy's Nyonya Cuisine for a delightful taste of authentic Peranakan flavours. From aromatic curries like Kapitan Chicken, to savoury and tangy tamarind-based Nyonya Steamed Fish, the inviting ambience and warm hospitality create the perfect setting for enjoying classic Nyonya dishes. Then, make a pit stop at legendary local pastry shop Him Heang for some local Tambun biscuits. Made fresh daily, these bite-sized biscuits are wrapped in sweet, flaky pastry crust and are filled with savoury green bean paste.
