Julien Tongourian, executive chef of Robuchon au Dôme at the Grand Lisboa Macau, first came to Macau a decade ago to assist with an event alongside the renowned chef Joël Robuchon. Arriving with just one piece of luggage and planning to stay for only a week, he ended up staying for ten years—and falling in love with the city.
“Macau is a lovely city, with a lot of diversity, for the culture and the food.” he shares. It has peaceful spots perfect for quiet reflection, as well as lively places where you could really enjoy life.
For a quiet escape, he heads to Cheoc Van Beach. This serene white-sand beach is a hidden gem cherished by locals. Tongourian enjoys spending Sundays there with his family, where the kids can explore and play freely while the adults relax, chat, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.
Another favourite weekend spot for him is the Old Taipa Tavern. This cozy tavern offers delicious beer and casual fare in a relaxed, European-style setting—perfect for gathering with friends and family.
When it comes to food, Tongourian recommends the two-MICHELIN-Starred restaurant at Grand Lisboa Macau, The 8. He is particularly impressed by their intricately crafted dim sum, such as the Steamed Dumplings with Cristal Blue Shrimps in a Goldfish Shape and the hedgehog-shaped signature Steamed Barbecued Buns with Preserved Vegetables. “What they’re creating takes a lot of time and an incredible amount of passion,” he says. He is also a fan of the restaurant’s Peking Duck, describing its crispy, flavourful, and rich texture as absolutely addictive.
For a quick bite, he recommends the iconic Margaret’s Egg Tart. It’s the perfect spot to satisfy a little hunger, with freshly baked, creamy, and sweet egg tarts always coming out of the oven.
For Tongourian, Macau offers a vibrant and diverse array of experiences, from tranquil hideaways and family-friendly spots and from fine dining and street snacks—making it a destination full of surprises and delights for every type of traveller.
