Congratulations to Daniel Todd of One Star The Dabney, the 2023 MICHELIN Guide Washington, D.C. Exceptional Cocktail Award Winner, presented by Basil Hayden!
Initially starting his career in Baltimore, Todd's introduction to the world of cocktails has been nothing short of talented people and refreshing drinks. Through experimentation and creativity, Todd realized that cocktails aren't just another drink—they're a unique moment, they're an opportunity to learn and engage with the guest.
Below, the award winner gives us the rundown on his ideal meal pairing, favorite non-alcoholic drink, and all things cocktails. Cheers!
How were you introduced to the world of cocktails?
I started bartending at a venue/club in Baltimore called The Crown, which by design, is a place for people to be creative. There were a few books that really grabbed me after my interest was piqued—one of those being written by The Dabney’s new upstairs neighbor, Death & Co, as well as The Bar Book by Jeffrey Morgenthaler. A lot of experimenting, listening and working alongside some excellent people has kept me aware that I am still being introduced to the world of cocktails, but I love what I have seen and been a part of so far.
How has your relationship with cocktails changed?
It's become more and more clear to me that a cocktail is less of an object and more of a moment. Cocktails are a unique opportunity to learn about and engage with someone—you can take them out of their comfort zone, bring them comfort, or both.
What are you drinking these days?
These little bottles of sparkling apple juice from Domaine Dupont!
Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
I think that Coca-Cola is the most delicious drink in general. It is so satisfying.
How have your cocktail tastes changed over the years?
Over the years, I have been very consistent in being excited by the idea of having a gin and tonic.
What’s the biggest misconception about mixology or cocktails in general?
Particularly when talking about cocktails or spirits, it is easy to get caught up in what people proclaim to be “the best". "The best" is a feeling you get.
What’s your ideal meal and pairing?
Crabs, fried chicken and ice cold Coca-Cola. Beer with crabs is good and all, but a pitcher of fountain cola is something else.
