Austria counts 82 MICHELIN-Starred Restaurants

A new Three-Star restaurant, Steirereck im Stadtpark, achieves the highest culinary distinction. 13 new Two-Star restaurants and 53 new One-Star restaurants also reflect the fantastic achievements of Austria's restaurateurs.

Fulfilling our mission to provide discerning diners with the finest recommendations and pay tribute to the dedication and expertise of restaurateurs, we are now launching our national restaurant selection for Austria.

The MICHELIN Guide positions Austria as a compelling destination for travelers and food enthusiasts through its nationwide selection. In contrast to previous years, when only restaurants in Vienna, Salzburg, and Kleinwalsertal were part of the selection, now restaurateurs across all regions of the country are being rightfully acknowledged for their excellence.

Across all regions, a considerable number of distinctions have been awarded to a total of 82 award-winning restaurants, 43 Bib Gourmands commending the best value for money and 33 Green Stars highlighting sustainable initiatives.

New leader: Three MICHELIN Stars for Steirereck im Stadtpark

In its national edition, the MICHELIN Guide for Austria showcases one new Three Star restaurant. The Vienna restaurant Steirereck im Stadtpark – previously awarded Two MICHELIN Stars in Vienna’s restaurant selection – has now made it into the top league. This extraordinary achievement comes courtesy of the individuality and authenticity that patron Heinz Reitbauer and his team, led by head chef Michael Bauböck, bring to the plates at this venue. "Definitely not your standard cuisine. The dishes are not at all highbrow or overloaded. At the establishment, food is prepared lightly, freshly and with an impressive dose of elegance and tasteful complexity," MICHELIN Inspectors explain, expressing absolute ardour. Steirereck impressively demonstrates to its guests that top-notch cuisine doesn’t always require luxury ingredients. Inspectors were just as impressed by “veal lights with chive dumplings and marjoram” as well as the remarkable selection of items on the menu overall, which also includes several classics and a host of regional produce. Sommelier René Antrag also received plenty of praise for his exceptiona wine expertise. Steirereck im Stadtpark shares the gastronomic pinnacle of Vienna and Austria with the stylish restaurant Amador, located at the Hajszan Neumann winery, which has been awarded Three MICHELIN stars for years thanks to the sophisticated and creative cuisine of Juan Amador.

13 New Two-Star Restaurants

The MICHELIN Guide has now awarded 13 notable restaurants in Austria Two Stars, alongside the five establishments already singled out. They include Restaurant Stüva in Ischgl (Tyrol). In his awe-inspiring set menu, Chef-Owner Benjamin Parth showcases outstanding creativity and ingredients of the highest quality. Another highlight is the small Ois restaurant, which is housed in the remote Mühltalhof in Neufelden (Upper Austria). Here, Philip Rachinger delivers top-flight cuisine with a number of surprising twists. Just as outstanding are the bold modern dishes delivered at Schwarzer Adler in Hall (Tyrol) by Johannes Nuding, who has returned to his Austrian roots after an international culinary career. In the tasteful Alpine-style setting of Griggeler Stuba at Burg Vital Resort in Lech am Arlberg (Vorarlberg), Chef Sebastian Jakob provides a first-rate culinary experience with his creative set menu, which features skillfully integrated Japanese accents. Another standout establishment is the quintessentially classic Restaurant Obauer in Werfen (Salzburg). True to tradition, but by no means outdated, brothers Karl and Rudolf Obauer are upholding the values of their long-standing family business. Kräuterreich by Vitus Winkler in Sankt Veit im Pongau (Salzburg) presents a striking contrast in terms of philosophy and style. In his distinctive restaurant, Vitus Winkler uses exclusively regional ingredients to conjure up nature-driven, herb-rich dishes that are highly creative and anything but ordinary. In addition to Two MICHELIN Stars, the restaurant has also been awarded a Green Star for its commitment to sustainability. New to Vienna and awarded Two Stars right off the bat, Doubek offers a one-of-a-kind experience with owner Stefan Doubek's unique fire-based concept at its core. Diners are invited to embark on a thrilling and meticulously planned culinary adventure that is guaranteed to be memorable. The following Viennese restaurants also succeeded in retaining their Two Stars: Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant, Mraz & Sohn, and Konstantin Filippou.

53 New One-Star Restaurants

Of the 62 restaurants in Austria to be awarded One MICHELIN Star, 53 are new additions. These include, for example, Die Forelle in Weißensee (Carinthia), located in a nature park from which owner Hannes Müller draws inspiration for his creative regional "Berg.See.Küche" ("mountain.lake.cuisine") concept. This has earned him not only a MICHELIN Star but also a Green Star for sustainable gastronomy. RAU nature based cuisine in Großraming (Upper Austria) is noteworthy for its innovative "10 seasons" concept, developed by Chef-Owner Klemens Gold. Here, too, the focus is on nature and seasonality, and the consistent implementation of sustainable practices has earned the restaurant a Green Star. At Sigwart's Tiroler Weinstuben in Brixlegg (Tyrol), a family-run business in its sixth generation, owner Gertraud Sigwart cooks up a fantastic take on classic cuisine, peppered with unique influences. Another fine example of MICHELIN-Starred gastronomy is the casual and modern Esslokal in Hadersdorf am Kamp (Lower Austria). Diners are spoiled for choice with Roland Huber's distinctive range of Asian-influenced creations. In addition to its five existing One-Star restaurants (namely TIAN, Edvard, APRON, [aend], and Pramerl & the Wolf) Vienna boasts three newcomers: Esszimmer - Everybody's Darling, showcasing Alexander Kumptner's youthful, modern vision; the stylish Restaurant Herzig with Sören Herzig's precisely crafted, modern cuisine; and Z'SOM, where Chef-Owner Diego Briones infuses his dishes with the flavors of his South American homeland and a certain je ne sais quoi, complemented by the front-of-house manager's Tyrolean warmth.

33 MICHELIN Green Stars for Environmentally Conscious Restaurants

Since 2020, the MICHELIN Green Star has been awarded to restaurants adhering to sustainable practices, recognizing those that excel in their respectful approach to nature and resources. These establishments prioritize the use of regional produce, often certified organic or sourced from their own farms. They are also aligned with the seasons and set great store by animal welfare, while nose-to-tail and leaf-to-root are key principles. Recycling and energy conservation also play a crucial role, as does raising awareness about sustainability among employees and diners alike. In recognition of forward-thinking initiatives such as these and many more, 33 restaurants in the Austrian selection have been awarded the Green Star. Beyond the existing Green Star recipients in Vienna's selection, MAST Weinbistro and TIAN, the 31 new Green Stars include the tranquil countryside venue Am Mahrbach, which is set in a farmhouse in Königsdorf (Burgenland) and has also received a MICHELIN Star. The exceedingly cozy Gastwirtschaft Floh, in Langenlebarn (Lower Austria), also joins the ranks, along with long-standing family business Thaller in Sankt Veit am Vogau (Styria), which was awarded a Green Star for both its down-to-earth Gasthaus and its restaurant formats. The latter has also clinched a MICHELIN Star. Also deserving of mention are Rauchkuchl, in the remote village of Stuhlfelden (Salzburg) and known for its age-old wood-burning stove, and Guat'z Essen in Stumm (Tyrol), which has been given a Green Star as well as a MICHELIN Star. Wirtshaus Steirereck am POGUSCH, in an attractive location in the lush countryside of Turnau (Styria), is just as dedicated to sustainability.

43 Restaurants Receive the Bib Gourmand Award

In its Austria-wide selection, The MICHELIN Guide has awarded 43 restaurants the Bib Gourmand, an extremely popular accolade that emphasizes value for money. The Bib Gourmand has been retained by four restaurants from the former Vienna selection (MAST Weinbistro, Meierei im Stadtpark, Mochi, and Woracziczky) as well as by Carnozet in Hirschegg in Kleinwalsertal. The 38 new Bib Gourmand restaurants include the pleasingly unpretentious Zum Fröhlichen Arbeiter in Apetlon (Burgenland); Malerwinkl in Fehring (Styria), which is housed in a small Kunsthotel (or "art hotel"); and Mocking - Das Wirtshaus, directly below the Streif in the famous ski resort of Kitzbühel (Tyrol). Göttfried, ideally located in the old town of Linz (Upper Austria), the distinctively charming Freigeist in Lustenau (Vorarlberg), and picture-perfect inn Hueber der Wirt in Bründl in Sankt Georgen an der Leys (Lower Austria) also stand out on account of their delicious and affordably priced food.

Three Recipients of MICHELIN Special Awards

The MICHELIN Guide has also awarded three special distinctions: Service, Young Chef, and Sommelier. The MICHELIN Service Award went to Barbara Eselböck of Taubenkobel in Schützen am Gebirge (Burgenland). In a long-established family business, she demonstrates true passion, charm, and dedication as an exemplary hostess, providing the perfect complement to the Two-Star cuisine of her husband, Alain Weissgerber.

The MICHELIN Young Chef Award was bestowed upon Julian Stieger, Head Chef at Rote Wand Chef's Table in Lech am Arlberg (Vorarlberg). At a young age, he can already boast significant success with his "Chef's Table" concept, having been honored with Two MICHELIN Stars for his unique culinary style. His surprise menu features modern dishes that reflect painstaking preparation, yet eschew excessive showmanship.

The well-deserved winner of the MICHELIN Sommelier Award is Alexander Koblinger, who proves to be a walking wine encyclopaedia at Döllerers Genießerrestaurant in Golling an der Salzach (SBG). As one of the few Master Sommeliers in Austria, after refining his skills in the USA and Great Britain, he now works as head sommelier in Salzburgerland. His wine pairings are sensitively presented and he never fails to impress guests with his expertise. A perfect match for both Andreas Döllerer's highly awarded, modern-alpine cooking and his regional-seasonal cuisine at the Wirtshaus.
