Black Restaurant Week is heading to the Bay Area for the first time this year. Taking place October 23 to November 5, nine black-owned restaurants are offering a variety of lunch, brunch and dinner specials, with meals ranging from $15 to $45 based on the formality of the establishment.
The roster of participating restaurants includes Kingston 11 Cuisine, serving a health-conscious blend of Jamaican and Californian dishes; Ethiopian restaurant Ensarro in the Adams Point neighborhood; and Hazel Southern Kitchen serving a combination of barbecue, Creole and classic Southern dishes.
In addition to the restaurant specials, there are a number of other events throughout the duration of the event, including a panel of industry leaders, a tasting event called Nosh, and a five-course dinner with chef Terry Braggs paired with wines provided by Branwar Wines. Braggs owns a catering company with prior experience as an executive chef in Silicon Valley, and Branwar Wines predominantly distributes wines from South Africa.
The first Black Restaurant Week was held in 2016 in Houston, with additional events in Atlanta and now San Francisco. The organization's goal is to increase awareness of its participating restaurants, as well as supporting the communities where they exist. Next on the horizon is expanding the event to New Orleans.
