Three Keys in Bordeaux: The Hot Spring Hotel in Wine Country

Les Sources de Caudalie combines Vinotherapy from the famous French brand with a natural hot spring and an ancient vineyard.

In 2024, the MICHELIN Guide is announcing the first ever MICHELIN Keys — a brand new distinction that recognizes the most outstanding hotels across the world. Les Sources de Caudalie is one of the only Three Key hotels in France. Find our selection team’s official take, here.

And below, take a peek inside one of this hotel’s signature spaces.

The Space:

The sublime spa at Les Sources de Caudalie, where rustic, natural construction collides with an extensive list of Vinotherapy treatments. And the pièce de résistance: a natural, spring-fed thermal pool.

Where:

Just a few kilometers from the center of Bordeaux, amongst the vineyards of the renowned Château Smith Haut Lafitte. The winery dates back to the 14th century, and holds an exclusive Grand Cru Classé distinction. It’s in this setting that you can soak up the thermal waters.

Who Comes Here:

Burn-out instagrammars, lovers of fine Bordeaux wines, Jay Z and Beyoncé. Visit when you need a true mental and physical cure. The spa is open to guests and visitors alike.

What It’s Like:

The spa is equipped with numerous treatment rooms, a hammam, swimming pool, jacuzzi, and many relaxation rooms. Like the rest of the hotel, it’s built with a serious focus on natural materials, many of them reused. You can’t help but notice the beautiful contrast between the rustic materials (old beams, tiles, and stones) and this place of purest luxury and relaxation.

But the hook, for us, is the natural spring — 540 meters below the surface — that feeds the spa’s naturally-heated soaking pool. You could hardly imagine a better location. What’s not directly provided by nature is provided by Caudalie, a well-known French beauty company whose skincare products are infused with natural grape extracts.

True to its brand and namesake, Les Sources de Caudalie bases its spa programs, rituals, and treatments around the purest Vinotherapie (the signature treatment is the Resveratrol Lift facial, a 50-minute communion with grape oils to add shape, definition, and make you positively glow).

When you’re not in the spa, you’re doing something else to restore body and mind. Yoga, vineyard strolls, or the "Bain de Forêt" — a sylvotherapy session (read: forest immersion) organized jointly by an arborist and a visual artist/musician. Extend the activity for a walk along the Forêt des Sens trail, dotted with numerous works of art that blend into the natural surroundings.

The Background:

Les Sources de Caudalie is France's most popular wellness hotel. Comprising 60 rooms, the vast spa, and three restaurants, it was created in collaboration with the Caudalie brand, specialists in natural, vinotherapy based cosmetics. The spa experience is one you’re unlikely to find anywhere in France (or the world). And don't forget that Château Smith Haut Lafitte, which produces some of the world's finest wines, is just across the road. In fact, the winery and hotel are owned by the same family.

Room Service?

The hotel has three different restaurants: La Grand Vigne, awarded Two Stars by the Michelin Guide, La Table du Lavoir, a gourmet bistro, and Rouge, a wine bar and casual restaurant offering plates from the southwest of France. And yes, breakfast, lunch and dinner can be served in your room (with a dedicated room service menu).

Any Notable Rooms?

L'Île aux Oiseaux, a 50 m2 suite, is the most iconic. Its name evokes the nature reserve of the Arcachon Basin, less than an hour's drive away. Imagined as a vast cabin with a single room by interior designer Rabih Kayrouz, it is a cocoon of a retreat, with a terrace on stilts that opens onto another magnificent, naturally-fed pool.
