Le Pigalle: SoPi’s New, Trendy Hang-Out Spot

Located in Pigalle, once the capital's red-light district but now more of a hipster magnet, Le Pigalle bears its name well. At the foot of Montmartre, among the neon shop signs, cool bars and lights of the Moulin Rouge, the hotel stands out from the crowd with its retro arty style.

Tapping into the spirit of the neighbourhood it calls home, Le Pigalle Hotel captures Pigalle's essence, while interpreting it in its own enthusiastic way. With parties, DJ sets and table dances, a vinyl library and a newspaper & book kiosk, the soul of Pigalle lives on within these walls. The same goes for the items available at the hotel, all of which are sourced locally: the croissants served at breakfast come from the bakery next door, the beer from a small Pigalle brasserie and the flowers from a nearby florist.

Stylised
Owner Valéry Grégo has a formula for fabulousness; the hotel's eclectic décor gives the impression that everything is in its place, with elements not so much artfully arranged as serendipitously thrown together in a way that seems to flow effortlessly. This natural, spontaneous effect is down to the work of two talented architects from the Parisian agency Festen – Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay – and enhanced by the contributions of numerous artists and artisans from the neighbourhood, whose work is on display in the hotel. Objects picked up by an antique dealer in Saint Ouen are juxtaposed with the classical attributes of the building's structure and the idiosyncrasies that are characteristic of this once deprived area – terrazzo, posters and photos by current artists or collectives, and ultra-contemporary furniture.

Personalised
The 40 comfortable guestrooms are simple and stylish; compact (12-35m²), but brimming with personality as all are different, and decorated with knick-knacks, books and period furniture found at flea markets. It’s a bit like staying with friends who are collectors. All rooms eschew ostentatious luxury in lieu of elevated comfort; you feel at home here. They are equipped with iPads and turntables with enough vinyl to keep you up playing music all night; photos and old erotic film posters hang on the walls in a nod to the area's X-rated past.

Atmosphere
The unique character of the establishment is by no means confined to the guestrooms. The public areas are frequented not only by hotel patrons, but also by neighbours, local hipsters and artists. On the ground floor, there is a bar-restaurant, a pole-dancing pole, a book and newspaper kiosk, a DJ booth and, in the basement, a funky smoking room.

Finally, if you want to sample the legendary nightlife of Pigalle, be sure to check out the cocktail scene, which starts right on your doorstep with Dirty Dick and Lulu White etc. Le Pigalle organises nights with music courtesy of various DJs, exhibitions, drawing classes, themed evenings... More than a hotel, Le Pigalle has plugged into the energy of its surroundings to become a buzzing hub of neighbourhood life.
